strawberry varieties for hot humid climate

can anyone reccomend any strawberry varieties for houston, texas i wanted to try earliglow but i was not sure how well adapted it is to my climate

I doubt there are many varieties well adapted to Houston. What I'd think about is something like Chandler planted this fall for harvest next spring. I'd do it on black plastic. No strawberry is going to take kindly to Houston summers. So a short-season, annual system is likely your best bet.

But I'm no strawberry expert. Maybe someone has a better idea.

A friend of mine did what fruitnut describes in Gainesville, FL with Chandlers, they were great. Can't remember exactly when they were planted (on plastic mulch raised beds with drip irrigation) but it was probably around late Feb.. Basically, they were planted as early as possible and grown as a spring annual, a very common commercial practice in FL.

I think Ferdinand Pichard may soon be coming to live with me. :) I'm not buying anything for the next couple of weeks, though. I have some friends who are landscape architects and they know some people who grow antique roses, I think for the wholesale trade. They say they'll take me out to these people's house where I can tour their personal garden and buy some roses. So I need to wait and see what I can get there. Sherry, these people live very near Ocala. (And judging by your screen name, I guess you do, too.) :-) If it turns out that they're actually set up for retail and you can shop there without having landscape architects there to give the secret handshake, I'll let you know. I'm guessing they probably grew a good portion of roses in my garden that I bought a local nurseries, and maybe yours, too. Everybody cross your fingers that they have Ferndinand Pichard...or Rainbow...or Careless Love...

Boscobel in hot, humid climates?

Well, I'm not in the south but In New England we have stretches of summer weather that are hot and sweltering. This summer has been particularly hot and wet and many of my roses are balling. Bosocbel has been excellent under these conditions, never balling, holding up to the downpours, looking fine and fresh in the heatwaves. They make a great low hedge. I have mine planted close together bordering a circle garden. As for blackpot, I do spray but BS is so persistent here that the more BS prone roses reveal their tendency despite spray. Boscobel is perfectly healthy under these conditions.

growing lavender in humid climate

Andrepap, Summer in southwest Georgia is very, very humid (great for plumping up your wrinkles). I love lavender and when I moved to south Georgia, several plant experts told me lavender did not grow well here because of the humidity. However, I have a lavender plant growing in a 2 1/2 foot section of flower bed between my kitchen door and parking pad and it is thriving. The lavender is located on the southern side of the house and receives hot afternoon sun. I have mulched the bed with pine straw and water it occasionally. I have sandy soil so the drainage is excellent. I haven't had any problems with bugs or diseases....I can't remember the variety (perhaps, Provence), but I think I bought it at Lowe's. I had another lavender planted on the other side of the kitchen door, but Yogi (my golden retriever) kept peeing on it every time he went out the door...I fixed that problem by "planting" a small stool by that side of the door. My advice is to plant a lavender and see how it does. You may need to try several locations to find the right spot. Good luck!

A picture is worth a thousand words, HU-659273525. But I'm glad your tree is doing well for you. They are one of my favorite BLEs although mine in zone 7a has been almost killed to the ground before and surely will be again someday, it came roaring back to life. I haven't seen any drunk birds yet, and in fact they seem to avoid mine. [Haha I now spot a mistake on that thread. The huge cyclamen blooming in September in Rye had to be something like C. graecum, not C. coum. Although now I seem to recall having a sidebar convo with someone on GOTE and finding out those cyclamen were some brobdingnagian hybrids that had just been introduced to the UK market, bred to make plants that looked a bit like C. persicum hybrids but were hardy enough for milder parts of NW Europe. Totally forget the name now, and I googled at the time to find they hadn't been brought to this side of the pond yet, as is so often the case. I'm still waiting for Clematis X 'Advent Bells', whose hybrid vigor might give it a better chance fighting my winters]

Hi guys, I'm Also here wondering, but I have an even bigger problem, where I live there is NO spring, winter or fall weather, the weather is a constant of 77F to 88F the whole year, any ideas?

Any chance I can even hatch seeds to bear with the weather?
