Lucky bamboo leaves turning yellow
Comments (28)Hello! I would like some help & advice on my bamboo plant. This plant was given to me earlier this year, about April. The plant has been growing a lot. I changed the water routinely, and fertilized and the leaves and plant were beautiful and blooming. Last week I changed the pot it was in to a much bigger one since the plant was thriving so well it was on the verge of tiping over since it was huge. I placed rocks in it, and fresh water. Last Friday the plant seemed fine, and then I come to work this morning and the leaves are turning yellow. Mostly on one stalk, but it seems like it's starting on the others as well. There are 6 stalks tied together. I changed the water, cleaned the vase and the rocks and put in distilled water just now. As I changed then, I saw that the stalk by the roots and turning a greenish yellow, but I didn't notice that before. What is going on with my plant? I'm so worried!! What do I do now? I can send more pictures!!! PLEASE HELP!!!!...See MoreSanderianas/lucky bamboo
Comments (5)Thanks Toni. Coming from an veteran plant grower like you, I consider that high praise! When I knocked the cleaning water into the LBs, they were in soil. I had bleach and dish detergent in the water. They were completely drenched. In hind sight, I should have taken them out of the soil, but I tried rinsing it several times instead. I'm not really heavy handed with the food. I've at times given them really diluted all purpose food. Diluted down to about a 10th strength. Lately I've been giving them the beer fertilizer about 1x a month. I use a tablespoon per gallon. So far, so good. I have two pots of LBs. One is at work about 2.5 feet from a south facing window. There's a corn plant between it and the window. The one at home is on the second shelf of a plant shelf. Maybe 18 - 24 inches away from an eastern facing window. Between it and the window are other plants. So they get diffused light. Right next to the window is a bit harsh I think. I have them both in regular potting soil with perlite added. I think I used 1/3 - 1/2 perlite. The plants are all in small pots. I'll keep them where they are until the plants start to dry out too fast or when I think the plant is languishing from not having enough root space. So far, it hasn't been an issue. I water them like they're pothos. I water as soon as I think they've dried out. Or when the leaves seem a bit droopy. When transitioning, though, the soil needs to be kept a bit moister. Not wet or muddy, but when top of the soil starts to dry. I'm sorry I didn't get back to you yesterday. If you ever need a quicker response, please email me. I check my email often. Hope that was helpful. Amanda...See MoreLucky Bamboo problem--yellow tips!
Comments (1)I'm not expert on lucky bamboo. I can tell you that when I moved mine closer to a window the leaf tips started to turn brown. Maybe the sun is too much for it. I find mine does best when it's a few feet away from a east window. You might want to post this on the lucky bamboo forum. Comments (44)Aside from having turned sideways from your last pic, that looks so much more promising than in your original pic! Go, baby, go! I took this pic for you of a variegated lucky bamboo plant of mine. About a year ago, the 2 stumps on the right were the entire plant. I cut them to use the tops as cuttings. Soon after, the stems to the left started to come up. The stumps never did make new tops, but each grew a new one from the base, just under the surface, as yours is doing. I'll probably cut the stumps to the right off soon at the soil level, now that their destination is clear. The other cool thing this pic shows is that the new trunks to the left are about twice the diameter of the older ones. The rock is there to keep squirrels from digging around in the pot. This whole thing has made me curious if this is what this kind of Dracaena usually does. I've only had this kind for about 4-5 yrs, so there hasn't been time for much experimentation yet. The tops that were removed are doing great in other pots, BTW. No sign of new tops or side branches forming on tham. I've pinched the growth tip from one to see how it responds....See Moreplantomaniac08
