I think just about everybody uses the GEII silicone. Yes, the bottom needs a base. Some use the plates from microwaves ( I can't find them in the TSs here). Anything fairly heavy and big enough to stabilize the totem. I think most people have them in their garden and bury the base in the dirt

For a base I have used glass dinner plates successfully. Turn them upside down so they don't collect water.

I've used microwave trays, big glass ashtrays, and upside down heavy glass serving plates.

Good questions! I will soon be making my first one and didn't realize it needed a base...(bangs forehead).

I also use the microwave trays... they are $1-2 here. Some of them have a vase as the last piece. Then you glue a copper cap piece inside the vase. You put a piece of pipe in the ground the same size as the cap..the totem then sits on the pipe. I did not explain it very well but I like this type too. Kind of gives them highth. Please take pictures when you are done!!

I've used microwave plates, a big punch bowl, and large heavy serving dishes for free-standing ones and vases and toothpick holders for ones being put on pipe. Copper pipe has gotten so expensive that I've been painting pvc conduit to look like copper and they fit better inside the vases and toothpick holders since they are thicker around than the copper pipe I usually use. I used Lexel to glue mine...longer cure time (3 weeks), but I am very happy with the reults so far.
