Q's re: glass totems

I've been viewing some of these totems and I must say they're very nicely made, and what creativity!! Ok, I have enough junk to make one of my own, but first, I'll need some help getting started. What type glue are u all using to adhere glass to glass? Is the bottom item attached to a base of some sort, like a block of wood or marble? What's keeping them from toppling over and crashing into bits, especially when placed on cement floors? I think that's all the questions I have for now, might come back and ask more if they come up. Thanks and keep posting those lovely pics, you all have inspired me!

I think just about everybody uses the GEII silicone. Yes, the bottom needs a base. Some use the plates from microwaves ( I can't find them in the TSs here). Anything fairly heavy and big enough to stabilize the totem. I think most people have them in their garden and bury the base in the dirt

For a base I have used glass dinner plates successfully. Turn them upside down so they don't collect water.

Lucky you to find a red vase! They aren't so easy to come by. I like the idea that your totem can be used as a garden decoration or a serving piece too. It would look great on a 4th of July buffet. Ditto for the clever candle holders too! Keep the totems coming!

Tracey, Sometimes I play with them to see which ones naturally go together and then glue those. Soemtimes I do two of three sets and after those are good and set I'll add them to another set. I've used boxes or 5 gallon buckets with towels to prop them while drying. Also, the silicone--well I just have to say that it will take practice and getting use to how it comes out of the tube and how it sets for you. I think we all have to go through a learnign process. If you cannot get straight lines with the glue or too much oozes out the sides I'd incorporate using Q-tips to clean it up a bit. But that can make it worse too. thanks jjaazzy! i too finally got to speak with john yesterday. my uneasiness about ordering from a source on another continent was put to rest. he is sending me three samples of the hammershell tile. i wanted to see the square and the rectangle patterns so he is making them up for me. the backing is porcelain and i knew about the coating from the website. so, for the hammershell tile the price is $28 US per square and he told me the shipping for 80 sq (my guesstimate) would be $300 US via UPS. i was planning to use it on the floor as a trim/border for marble or porcelain under the tub so it wouldn't be in a high traffic area. i had my suspicions about it's softness. i think by the tub would be safe though, just as long as we don't bring it out too far. i guess i'll make my decisions about that as we get a little closer. that's very strange about the shimmer under the halogens. i wonder if it would make a difference if viewed from another light source? i'll have to see it when it comes in. we don't have any lighting yet (they've just gotten to our roof) so i think i'll take it to a lighting showroom. THANK YOU for the heads up! in the meantime, let me know how you do with shelltile.net. i'll have to look them up as i haven't come across them before. i'll let you know when my samples come in. ...oh, and which of the tile are you looking to buy? thanks again!

I've used microwave trays, big glass ashtrays, and upside down heavy glass serving plates.

Good questions! I will soon be making my first one and didn't realize it needed a base...(bangs forehead).

I also use the microwave trays... they are $1-2 here. Some of them have a vase as the last piece. Then you glue a copper cap piece inside the vase. You put a piece of pipe in the ground the same size as the cap..the totem then sits on the pipe. I did not explain it very well but I like this type too. Kind of gives them highth. Please take pictures when you are done!!

I've used microwave plates, a big punch bowl, and large heavy serving dishes for free-standing ones and vases and toothpick holders for ones being put on pipe. Copper pipe has gotten so expensive that I've been painting pvc conduit to look like copper and they fit better inside the vases and toothpick holders since they are thicker around than the copper pipe I usually use. I used Lexel to glue mine...longer cure time (3 weeks), but I am very happy with the reults so far.
