Moving Thanksgiving Cacti

I will be moving from the Dallas area to Oklahoma City within the next few weeks. I have two Thanksgiving cacti..one is thriving and growing; the other decided to lose half of its bracts about 3 weeks ago...both treated the same and no reason for them to be unhappy! Anyway, after I move all of the boxes and furniture, I will come back for the pets and plants (pets in carriers)...any great thoughts as to what to do once I get up there to help these plants transition better? I will try to keep their lighting situation the same as best I can. What about watering, etc. Neither of them has begun to set buds yet.

Are they outside now? If so keep them outside in a protected overhang and on the dry side and dark side until threat of frost. They should bud up for you.

Being unfamiliar with just what kind of weather you give your cacti, it would seem to me your plants receive a more level amount of warm temperatures....and just what sort of frost visits you and when.

Cacti can do just as well never seeing the outdoors as those that do. Its all a matter of light.
But, I'm used to letting my cacti (7 plants) be touched by frost and thus budding up, then taken to a sunny window.
How does that manoeuvre be accomplished in your part of the world. Oklahoma City, having a zone of 7...isn't that far removed from your own Dallas's 8....and shouldn't amount to a great degree of difference as to how you have treated your cacti in the past.

I would imagine if you can give your plants about the same amount of light between now and when buds have formed other years, your plants probably wont know the difference.

Not fruit in the edible sense, just in that there will be seeds inside a fleshy outer covering if pollination occurs. Crossing means manually pollinating by putting the pollen from one plant on the pistil of another plant, to attempt to cause pollination to happen (performing the work that bees, moths, or hummingbirds would do in nature.) One must have multiple plants to try to do this for this particular kind of plant (meaning both Christmas & TG cacti) because they are self-sterile. TG, when I get blooms open on enough different plants, I'll see if I can make anything happen. Thanks for the inspiration, never tried before. I too am beginning to wonder if what Jujujojo saw was an Epiphyllum, the size of the blooms certainly sounds like it? Cyber, you didn't misunderstood...I'm guessing he didn't make it on Black friday or they never got more in? Shame, I really wanted to see them also... Julianna, what is Queens? From what I had read on the blog "Plants are the Strangest People" (http://plantsarethestrangestpeople.blogspot.com/2010/08/tease-schlumbergera-truncata-cvv.html ): " One is also almost certain to be surprised by the results: the genetics of Schlumbergera flower color are complicated and not fully understood. You can cross a salmon with a salmon and wind up with 200 white seedlings, or cross a pink with a yellow and get purples. Spontaneous mutations also sometimes happen, though since spontaneous mutations tend to be recessive, it can take years to get them to show up: you have to get two copies of a recessive gene in a plant before you can see what it does, and Schlumbergera self-incompatibility means that you can't just cross a plant with itself, or a close relative, to get the two recessive genes together." The blogger is one to do his homework so I would expect a high degree of reliability with his post.

Hi Nine, Not sure why it would be too late; I would agree w/ recommended 1/2 mix & 1/2 perlite as suggested above. OR, even better 1/3 each of mix, perlite & small bark. I'd stick w/ plastic pot & use a pebble tray underneath; they'll appreciate the extra humidity. Wishing you better health. Am in similar shoes; health crap took me by surprise recently too & swallowed up most of Aug. for me & the last month of summer here.

I should have been more clear...this is only the second season for me to have these cacti. I didn't really "do" anything to them last year for them to bloom. They've always lived in a bookshelf with rather diffused light from a south-facing window. I would like them to set buds (maybe even MORE buds than last year?). I guess as long as they haven't already set them and then I move, we'll be ok. Got to finish packing and get out of here :)
