Prime Jim and Prime Jan Update.

I planted some of each of these in 2008. Last year, I only got a small handful of berries late in the season. It was a cold, dry season last year which may have been a factor.

This year, its hot and generally been moist to wet with high to decent rainfall. They are doing well this year and beginning to bear a decent crop of extremely large berries. I am anxious to see if they continue to bear to frost like everbearing raspberries do.

I planyed a 55' row of prime jan tissue cultured plugs from Nourse Farms last yr. They grew very well, but I didn't get one berry. There were a lot of berries, but they didn't ripen. I think that planting them in May (and still covering them on nights of frost) didn't give them enough time to produce. This year, I am getting berries. I am hoping that continue to produce and ripen until the frost. I am pleased with the berries that have been harvested.

I planted 25 Prime Jan blackberries and was surprised at the rapid growth. I bought them from Nourse Farms as cultured plugs. The looked like a small tube of roots with two leaves attached. I have picked a few and it seems that there are many that are growing well, but it seems they are a very late to ripen variety. The size is much bigger than I anticipated. I hope that they all ripen before the first frost. The ones I have harvested have been very good. Does anyone have Prime Jim and how do they compare with the Prime Jan? I am thinking of putting in a row of Prime Jim's?

Steve, I don't have experience yet with blackberries but I would like to throw out a thought. My experience comes from figs, Chicago Hardy to be exact. I had the same rational when I bought my figs thinking that if it produces on new wood I would get a crop. Unfortunately the new wood does not mature and produce quickly enough in our area. I have gotten some figs to form but never to ripen. This year I have one fig planted outside close to the foundation and well protected, and several in my garage in a tiny space with a heater connected to an outlet that will turn on at 37F. I hope to get some figs this year some how. I too would like to try blackberries but have decided since they won't survive without protection I might as well protect them and try to get a harvest on the old wood since I know I will not get a harvest on new wood. I ordered Siskiyou as an early ripening type knowing it will have to be protected. It's just an experiment and I wish I could give you some results but I don't have any yet.

OK.This is my experience with Carries.I was in Laras Farm buying mangos(the fruit)a couple of years ago and i tall him about this funny after taste that people describe here and in others forums,and he told me tha Carrie has to be picked when he can almost fall in ur hand when u touch it.Then he open one right there for me to taste and was heaven in earth.So i brought some Carries that by the way had more green and yellow that the one yhat i taste there that was almost complete yellow.Ok i wait for then to ripe in my home and guess what-every one has that weird after taste like herb or medicine....so now i have my first year with carries on my tree and i really worried.Is the Carrie the kind of Mango that need to be picked in the right time to taste good?Was the carrie that i taste on Laras really a Carrie?I will love to hear the experience of people that love the Carrie mango if his taste can have that medicine after taste depending when u pick then.Thank You. Thanks everyone! I'll admit I can't take the credit for stain idea either.... Mldao gave me the suggestion. Justinea - I didn't make them. My aunt has a friend who likes to sew. She never did anything like this before so it was all new to her. I think she did a good job. I bought the foam online and the cushion wraps over it. I do have a rubber pad on the seat to help with sliding. We honestly don't even sit on them. My sister is the only one who does when she comes to visit! It's funny how I was worried about my one cat's claws because he would always perch on the stools and be nosey. Since we stuck the cushions on he hasn't been up once.

Mine are all on primocanes. Even though we had the mildest winter in over a decade, all of the canes from 2009 winterkilled to the ground, and I cut them all off in early April before the new growth started. They were definitely dead as doornails except for an inch or two at the ground. The tops are definitely NOT hardy here for me, which is pretty much the same story as all of the improved blackberry cultivars. But, the roots come through like a champ.

I find that here in Central Indiana that about 2 years out of 3 that the canes are killed back partially in winter...maybe half way a lot.
