My Amber Totem

Ok...like I said before..I have been lurking for ever on here and finally decided that I'm joining in..LOL.

I made this totem last week. My first...was pretty proud of how it turned out for my first try. I think I'm going to either fill it with birdseed or use it as a butterfly feeder..haven't decided just yet. For now..it's outfront just looking pretty..lol.

We are glad you joined in, photos are a must here. LOL. We are not only GJ nuts, we're picture junkies. The amber glass looks so pretty out in the sun. I'd love to have found your leaf shaped topper. I recently scored 4 ruffly amber bowls (ashtrays actually) and a couple of amber vases, and trying to decide if I want one totem with them or two short ones instead. But after seeing yours, can't wait to get mine outside in the sunlight!

Karen (purplemoon)...your goodies sound great! Wish I had that sort of luck. I was fortunate enough to find the amber I did at the thrift shop. And the glass under the leaf was from my cabinet..lol..they were old glasses I held on to for those "just in case" emergencies...lol.

My Aunt is upset with me for using the amber tray on the bottom of my totem. She thinks it's depression glass. I'm not sure really...but I bought it for my totem..not to display..lol...

I can't wait to see your totem with the ashtrays..bet they turn out great!

And yes..I'm a picture junkie also..lol...I have a bunch saved to my computer from this forum so I can look back at them for ideas.

Tell you what, the next sunny day we get, which we are starting to see sun! I will take closer photos of them all. I debated about posting this one, because it is such a poor photo, but thought it may make someone laugh! I have been doing totems now for about two years. I got all of them out yesterday, out of the covered storage, and I'll get a photo of that, too! I have, ahem, a few... I love teapot totems the best. I'm finding that I am finally getting more fussy on the pieces I purchase, not just this hodgepodge collection! I also have a stash of wall glass flowers, and flowers with stems, and some teacup bird feeders. I'm the one who tries to sell by the road. It started by people just stopping to see what these interesting looking things were. I don't sell tons, but enough to finance my obsessions! so there you have it! More information than you may have wanted, and not enough photos! I'll get busy! I think I see the sun...

Thank you for all the kind words. I enjoy putting them together. I constantly buy glass and when I'm ready to work on one, first I decide on the color or "these" plates/glasses. Then I just start building, pulling things from my stash. I figure I must be getting pretty good at them because my teen-age daughter doesn't even roll her eyes at me anymore!! :) misspistachio - they are glued together with GEII silicon. All my glass comes from GW, with an occasional piece from Dollar Tree. Frou, isn't that frog a hoot! He was at GW, and I bought him with no plans in mind. Then when I found those colorful vases, I discovered how well he went with them. I'm also finding those so much easier to keep clean. The crystal I love, is a real pain. We have very hard water and trying to keep the lime off them..or even keep the sparkling clear look, is so difficult for me. Thanks for all the nice compliments, Everyone. It means a lot. I don't have any family or friends who like this kind of stuff, so only you understand and appreciate it. hugs, Karen

WOW! I love the mushrooms...and the totems...and the flowers!!! I was interested in seeing the flanges that you used for the flowers. I've been making a few and I used some round wooden thingies that I got at the hardware store. I glued a copper elbow onto a copper pipe, then glued them into the wooden thingie, and glued it all to the back of the flower. What did you use for the stems? Did you glue the plates, etc. together or did you screw them. I've glued most of mine but yesterday hubby (DH?) drilled holes in a couple of bowls for me with a glass bit to see if I like that better. I have had a little trouble with the silicone not sticking on a couple of them, but when I bought a new tube and noticed the difference in consistency I've decided the first one might have been old. What did you use for the tops of the painted mushrooms? I love them. I have made some. One is emerald green and I don't care for it. I've decided that mushrooms shouldn't be bright green. Might try throwing a little paint on it. I hope some day our yard will look like yours. We moved into a new house last October. Have a whole yard to landscape if it will ever quit raining!

Well you may not like the glass but it was what I had available to me at the time and it doesn't bother me that it doesn't match the style of the rest of the glass. I like how it turned out just the same. I was looking for more height. (smile)
And the top is not a bird..it's a glass leaf dish of some sort.

dusty you have been nice for a good while, why stir the water now. There is no written law about what you put in your totem...even if they all are different kinds and colors. It is a beautiful way to use glass to put bling in the garden.

I think the clear glass gives the leaf the appearance of floating on air.

Great totem,very pretty amber glass. I always check to see what I'm using in case it's valuable. If it's worth something then it can fund more glass. There's so much glass out there,so little time :) I've got a huge stash waiting for me!

I love your totem. I think the Leaf on top really tops it off!!! Great job!!! It looks beautiful in the sunlight. Amber glass has that way about it doesn't it?(-: Thanks for sharing your picture(-: And welcome to the forum!!!! My sons friend is a Marine stationed in Iraq. ( I read your other post)

Dusty...you might be right about an ashtray..never thought of that. And I can see how you would think it's a bird from that picture. I'll take another one tomorrow at a different angle to show you all the leaf shape better.

Mz Fran...LOL...I'm so glad I inspired you to post and try one for yourself. I bet you do great with it!

Kudzukween - Yes I agree with you..from now on I better be more careful about what glass I use..lol..my Aunt will have my head if I don't..LOL.

How fun! This is one I did using amber globes from old lamps and an amber glass dish. Only problem is that something fell on it and broke the middle ball, so I have to redo the whole thing.

Oorahgirl, I LOVE YOUR TOTEM!!!! I like the variety of the amber with the clear glass...and I love the leaf on top! You have inspired me! My wife and I have been collecting or a totem. I have not seen you post in awhile. I miss you and your creations! PLEASE POST SOON! We miss you! Kirk
