Hanging Garden Globes

Here's one of my favorite garden junk projects ever: hanging glass globes. These beautiful glass pieces started life as table and swag lamps from the 60's or 70's, which were thrift store finds. I took them apart, then simply put them back together in a way that allowed them to hang from the shepherd's hooks. The smaller ones I attached to actual threaded lamp rods and capped them, so I could poke them into the ground wherever they seemed "needed." The blue one is my all-time favorite... I still have it, along with a different (larger) amber one and the small staked ones. I also have two globes-in-waiting - a deep amber iridescent one and a smooth dark green one, for which I just need to scavenge some additional hardware. I wish I still had that cool old crate in the background, and the tin "chimney" off to the left... I did manage to save the pretty hosta from the flood in 2008, along with many others, and replant them at our new place on higher ground.

Here is what it says on the 3M site about outside use of the Command hooks: Q: Can I use Command adhesive outside in cold climates? A: You can, but the adhesive should be applied to a clean, smooth, dry surface when the temperature is above 50Â°F (10Â°C). If the temperature is below 50Â°F you can heat the surface with a hair dryer before application. Q: Can I use Command adhesive outside in hot climates? A: Extreme heat conditions and sunlight may cause the adhesive to eventually deteriorate, causing product failure. The adhesive could soften and lose adhesion above 105Â°F (40Â°C). OMG-Those are wonderful! We brought my parents to live with us and in order to make room for everybody's everything, I got rid of a lot of my stash. Also, a lot of stuff is packed up in a storage shed. Looking at these pics of yours, I've got to get out to those boxes and see what I have left as I'm sure I kept a couple of my old candle holders. I went looking last week at a couple of Salvation Armys specifically for crackled glass globes. Everyone must have the same idea because there wasn't a single one to be found. I have two 8" crackle globes (was hoping for a third to make a totem candle holder) I was saving for whatever came to mind and now that I see your pic, I know what I want to do with them--Thank you!

HANGING Does this sound OK? A bent wire hanger, inserted through two small holes in the top container, bending the hanger in half, so the hook part hangs over the various nails already drilled in the walls from previous tenants. I would only do 2 or 3 bottles together in a single column, for weight purposes, and because I don't need *that much* lettuce :) LOCATION Should I try them on the North or West facing walls? There's nails all over the place. When my Morning Glories get tall enough, I'm training them up the walls. There are lots of spiders on the West facing wall, but both sides get LOTS of heat where they intersect. TRANSPLANTING I have lots of leaf lettuce seedlings that I started inside, mostly 2" high. Some have been that height for a week. Are they ready to transplant? How many should I do per container? They germinated very quickly, but the roots are so shallow, they were hard to thin out and transplant the first time. Should I start some from seed within the containers, or will they germinate faster inside? These are from a mixed bag of "French salad leaf lettuce" varieties. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I normally like to experiment, but I have already bought so much potting soil this year, I really want to get these right! ha.

Hanging Globe Lights in the porch

Hello there, I love the look of the globe light in the front porch of the Eichler homes and would like to incorporate that in my new home that I'm building. Our new home has the front porch that is 4' deep x 12' wide. Over the years, I have collected around 10 vintage hanging globe lamps and would love to use 2 on the porch, close to the door. Please see the links for references. My question is, how can I tell if the globe lamps I have can be used outdoor? They are vintage. I've also been trying to look for hanging globe lamps that are UL listed for outdoor but I haven't come accross any. Since the lamp will be mostly covered by the porch, does it need to be outdoor listed? Would I be in trouble if I just use the regular hanging globe lamp for indoor? Thanks!

Beautiful.!!! Reminder to self. >Keep an eye open for globes when @ GW fashions: I have two shepards hooks that correct don't have anything hanging from them, but will as soon as I find me a couple glodes:

Found me two light globes this weekend at GW Fashions: They will soon be hanging from shepard hooks in the garden as soon as I figure out how to hang them. I think i'll cut a round circle from treaded wood to fit in the underside of the globe and then drill a small center hole to support a wire for hanging, I think that should work.

You may be able to use a large flat metal washer on the inside run a bolt through then another washer on top with a nut, connect some wire to the washer and nut assembly to hang it from. Maybe add some silicon caulk in there to cushion against the glass.

I have a huge one that was the center section of a tall table lamp, the lamp was ugly but the parts are pretty so I plan to use the deep garnet color glass section in a totem. I am liking the Shepard hook ideas though. very good looking.

Battery operated 10 string Christmas Lights would look great in these at night. Or you could use heavy tape and put in a small flashlight or tea light (battery)

Love your pretty, colorful corner! Old lamp parts are a great source of stuff for the junk garden aren't they.

I'm lovin' hoserhodo's idea of putting lights in them! I've found sometimes you can use a solar light inside if you can get the sensor to stick up through the hole enough to get sunlight to charge.

So sorry it's taken me a bit to get back in here, but I really appreciate all the kind comments on my glass globes. Yes, I just used hanging lamp hardware on them from other thrifted lamps, but of course you can purchase that hardware new if you wish. Glad you like them!

I recently bought something similar for a friend; a glass globe that looked like a fisherman's float, with a solar light inside, and a windchime hanging underneath. Wonder what else you could hang underneath?

And what's GW Fashions???
