Syngonium-Goose foot plant-loss of colour??

Ok, More questions I'm afraid ;)

I bought a goosefoot plant a few months ago too, it was tiny, mean't for a bottle garden.

I made it a little moss pole, and it has really grown already.BUT..most of the leaves are really pale.

It doesn't say on it's tag which particular type of syngonium it is. But the small leaves growing are dark green, with a lighter streak of green running down the middle.

2 big leaves are also this dark green, with most of the middle being a lighter green, rather than a streak.

The rest of the leaves (9 others) are a very, very pale green (almost a cream..with a hint of green!), slightly edged with dark green.

So what is happening to my goosefoot?!! Which are the normal leaves I wonder!

To start with it was getting alot of sunlight & the leaves went very pale. So about a month ago I moved it to where it gets light, but more shade. It's not as pale now...but still has these almost as pale leaves & various other shaded ones as described? it's just very odd.

Any idea's would be gratefully recieved!

Hi angel;

I *think* the darker leaf would be the right color unless it is a varigated plant.

Just a guess...Might be too much sun and/or water, Are the paler leaves seemingly thinner than the darker one?

They like lite to moderate shade and consistent moisture. They don't like to let go dry or be over watered. Inconsistent watering could also cause the leaves to change

It would help if you could post a picture.

I guess the leaves are thinnner (the paler ones) alot smoother too.
Well now my goosefoot is in a much shader place, it does get filtered daylight,but is much more shaded than before. I tend to water once a week, but i tend to go on when the soil is dryish, i water!
So I dont think it's over watered. I water from the bottom via a saucer, until it stops sucking up anymore...is that ok?

I am useless with the photo's! I tried before with the photo bucket etc, and just failed badly! In the end someone posted the photo for me...I'm so dumb!!
I will ry too again, as it does hinder me alot not being able to post pictures.thanks so much for all your advice...I shall try with the photo's, so fingers crossed ;)

I too miss Frank's..does anyone think they'll reopen? Towards the end, they sold some rare plants..beautiful plants..and I always found something new in 4" section..The bad points were..1. most of their annuals and perrenials were jacked up 2. when they had 10" tropical plant sales, most of their plants were loaded w/mites..3. when items were on sale, they didn't ring up the sale price..I had a fight with one employee the last time we went to Franks..bought a plant stand that read, price, 79.00..it held 9 different sized pots, which wasn't included. The woman rung up at 179.00..I politely told her she rang it up wrong..Pointed to the 'huge' sign hanging above the display plant stand..she called the manager..he disagreed..I asked, why then would that price be posted? He said, it was for the display..I said, fine, I'll take the display..he was pissed off and said, give her a new one..Then, the woman rang up pots..they were 1.00 each, sale price. She rang them up regular price..Mind you, the price was tagged on the darn pot!! AGain we argued..she called the manager..the same guy..lol..he was soooo pissed at me. He rerang the pots, didn't even bother to bag them..That got me started..I reached for the bags and set pots inside myself..I can be a realy 'itch' when I want to..words were spoken..I do not like being taken advantage of.. Then again, most employees knew about plants and could answer questions. Do I really miss Franks? LOL..No I do..but that one time was a disaster..Toni

Jsvand5, I don't know of any commercial source for Goose Creek seeds, but two people listed Goose Creek in the 2008 Seed Savers Exchange Yearbook. If you aren't a member of SSE yet, this would be a very good time to join because the 2009 Yearbook is just now going to the printer and will be out in a month or two. The Yearbook is a very good place to look for varieties that you can't find anywhere else, as many members list those for which they have enough seeds to offer. Laurel, there was never any patent granted for Goose Creek, nor will there be. Jimmy Williams applied for a patent on November 11, 2004 but it was never granted. Goose Creek was not "invented" by Jimmy Williams, and as noted above, the stages of ripeness described for Goose Creek are not unique to Goose Creek. Jimmy Williams can apply for a patent if he wishes but he won't get one. The United States Patent and Trademark Office has a public web page at http://patft.uspto.gov/ where anyone can look up patent applications as well as the patents that have been granted, and you will see that there is an application but it has NOT been granted. Hello ! So I am in the simcoe county area in Wasaga Beach ontario. I have 17 beautiful now 3 year old emerald cedars at 7 ft now. I back onto forest and get crazy wind from the bay. I COVER MY CEDARS and in 3 moves in 8 years with this being my 3rd hedge I’ll tell you why ...... WIND + animals. All the cedars in my area are brown, bare in the bottom or bare throughout. Rabbits go after the base, deer everything else. The wind here almost gives the cedars a wind burn. I never believed in tightly burlaping anything. I string up the cedars incase of freezing rain or in the case of this year lots of heavy snow, I then stake a wall front and back, then burlap the wall. I use a steel gaged fence tied to the post and burlap over too. Yes it’s excessive but I see the damage of uncovered, half eaten cedars. When I lived closer to Toronto I only saw damage from cedars out in the open exposed to our winter winds. At this point with how full and tall my cedars are I’m not about to start swapping out ones that die. Not to mention my neighbour who works at 4am (I still live in a subdivision) see’s deer stalking my cedar ‘Berlin wall’ a few times a week. It’s not attractive, neighbours don’t mind one bit and come spring I have no issues. My other neighbours had issues and did the same after replacing 6/9. You can use other materials other then steel gaged fence it is pricer I did it because the winter winds here are nuts and COLD the burlap without the support just caves in, I do it come November and no touch ups or issues until End of March / early April I take it down then reuse the same materials come fall. At this point the steel fence costs less then having to replace each tree. I also in the fall but those fertilizer spikes you hammer into the ground and put one for each tree/shrub it seems to do wonders. I water up until end of October. They are established but like anything else hot days - dry streaks I do my best and water everything. In our area the nurseries all agreed to cover the area around the trees but not cover completely allowing them to adjust to the temperature and as well snow won’t hurt them one bit just keep them twined incase of freezing rain etc

Hi angel;

One way to check if there is over watering is to take the plant out of the pot. Check the roots for color and texture. If the roots are brown/black or mushy, then it's too much water. If the roots are whitish, that's OK.

When a plant gets too much light it will bleach out. Usually it will stay bleached out until new growth appears, which will be a darker color---then you can eventually trim off the bleached leaves. :) These are tough plants so I would worry too much. There is no special reason to water from the bottom (in the saucer). I have always poured tap water right on the top until it drains out the bottom of the pot, then won't water again until the top inch or two of soil is dry. Happy growing. :)

I have checked the roots & they are whitish :)

I dont know why i water from the saucer, i just always have.Guess I find it easier not to over water that way. i do sometimes pour water straight onto the top of the soil, to wash any minerals back in!
Maybe it is just the bleached leaves from the sun then..it just puzzles me that now it isn't in the sun, it gets some, but more shade than before...some of the new growth is still turning pale...while other leaves stay dark? Trust me to have an odd plant!!

Thanks again for all the advice...I love my plant whatever, just didn't want to be doing wrong by it!

A lot of them are variegated and will get more variegation with more light. Many get more variegated as they mature especially if they grow up a pole rather than hanging. The leaves change shape too.

Your plant very well may be normal. If you can email a photo to me, I'd be happy to take a look.
