5ft tall and 2-3 foot long shoots doesn't sound like broccoli unless it went to seed...still sounds too tall though. Planting in April/May is way too late for broccoli in Phoenix. If it even survived our heat it probably would've have produced some kind of head that immediately flowered (yellow flowers) and went to seed.

Concur, the only member of the broccoli group that will approach that size is the sprouting type, which is normally grown in the winter, No broccoli will tolerate hot weather.

Not sure what the plant is either, but once broccoli bolts it is over. Guaranteed 104% over summer it bolted.

if you planted broc. in april or may your plant is going
to seed way to hot that time of year, it gets as hot here
as where you are,i set my broc. and caulif. plants in my
megatainers last week (11-9-10) i should harvest about
1-10-11 or so regards.

Well I have not seen anything remotely resembling a flower or a seed on either plant since they were planted.

I sure hate to pull it without having it produce anything but if you guys think it's a lost cause then that's what I'll do.

Looks like a Brussels Sprout plant. Those also need cool weather The plants look healthy so they may head as the weather cools. They form little cabbage heads where the leaf intersects the stem. Second and fourth photos seem to show the forming. As soon the heads become apparent, remove the corresponding leaf.

In your area, much better to plant broccoli in October.

Your Brussels sprouts sure are huge to not have many visible sprouts. The summer heat must have been preventing them from growing sprouts. Mine are only a foot tall and have sprouts growing all down the stem now. However, my climate is different and our recent (finally) cooler weather has probably stimulated them to begin growing sprouts. I also planted mine in September.

Well thanks. I was wondering about brussel sprouts because there are small bunches of leafs at the intersections. Nothing that has formed into a head but there is hope now with the cooler weather. The seed must have been mismarked. Should I strip the side shoots? They seem to be where some of the heads should have came out.
