Faux Verdigris Copper Finish On Pots, How To?

I have a brass pot and am wondering how I can give it a green patina similiar to what is sometimes seen on copper? What about pots made out of plastic or pottery is there any type of paint that will give them that type of look also?

I don't know what makes a faster patina for the real deal,sorry,but I did paint a cheap enamal tea pot with copper paint,then sponged on green paint over it,2 colors of green,light and dark,look better. It looks like real copper. I used plain old acrylic paints like apple barrel,etc. I probably sprayed a clear sealer over that since I use it outside with a plant in it.

There are kits in the building center paint dept that I have used.Tho the finish is applied just like kudzukween - tho they come with one color patina. The two color is a great idea. I've found that it you put a plastic paint or primer or tiecoat (Bulldog) down first- you can put just about any old paint over it and it seems to stick fine.

You make a solution of vinegar, salt and ammonia. Mix 1 cup of vinegar, 2-4 T salt (this is not an exact science) and maybe a quarter cup ammonia. Put the mixture in a spray bottle and spray your pot. Leave them dry in the air. Repeat as necessary until you have the color you want your copper to be. Joyce is right, though. Check to make sure it isn't lacquered. If not, and you follow these instructions, you may want to lacquer the pots yourself using Rustoleum spray lacquer (high gloss or matte are fine). Make sure that you only lightly coat the pots, and do several very light coats. The lacquer can dull the color and turn it brown if you overdo it. I'm an artist, and I use this method on my relief drawings in copper, and it works nicely.

Hi folks, I own a major copper fabrication company - can't say which one, of course. We build hundreds of copper hoods, sinks, & countertops. We do all of the different finishes on copper - mirror polish, bright satin, light french brown, medium french brown, and on and on. I'm with suds about the most attractive finish - just well maintained bare copper... BUT - it's a real hassle to maintain. We'll do bare when folks insist, but I just don't recommend it. So based on customer feedback - we recommend hot process french brown patina, lacquered and waxed. We have gotten get consistent rave reviews about it from o,ur customers and no complaints. It's great looking right from the start, and easy to maintain, especially on hoods, and positively doesn't show fingerprints. Less durable on sinks, but still the best choice, my opinion. Very good on copper countertops as well. The main thing is avoid contact with acidic substances, and wax it. And about the green - only happens outdoors - won't happen indoors. The way I see it, you start out looking good with the patina, and as it wears you work down to bare copper, and it looks good the whole way. If you start bare, you fight with the fingerprints forever almost until the color eventually stabilizes. Looks real bad unless you really stay on it and put in that polishing time. And for sure, don't lacquer it if you're going to leave it bare. Very bad idea - it'll chip and tarnish where it chips and you'll have a very difficult-to-fix mess. So that's a highly opinionated point of view coming from a guy who's not keen on polishing copper every week. Hope this helps!

FM, I am glad to hear you are interested in decorative painting, it is a lot of fun and can be learned. You can choose to use patterns or not, the patterns are meant to be guides. I too am a self-taught painter and for the record the book you have is a very good one because it covers everything you need to know about any project from start to finish with loads of other info on tools, techniques, and finishes. The projects in that book would be a very good place to start. I have so many brands of paint but like Luvs said I choose the paint for the project I am working on. But as far as none being like oils....There are mediums you can add to acrylic to make them act like oils and FolkArts HD paint works very much like oils without using any mediums. I started painting with oils back in the day and switched to acrylics over the years. The beauty of acrylics is that they can be acrylics but can also act as watercolors or oils...very versatile. Help! Hot pot in copper sink..

If you put a little lemon juice on the sink and let it sit for awhile, then rinse away. What did that do to the finish? If it the sink has a natural patina, you will likely see a brighter copper color. If it is a lacquered finish, you probably will not see a change. Our copper farmhouse sink has a natural patina, so at times where the patina gets stripped away, like from something acidic, the patina will return after a few weeks. That's why they call it a "living finish". If your sink has a lacquered finish, I'm not sure how you'd rectify that other than trying to strip all of the lacquer to get down to bare metal. But, if the metal is as deeageaux indicates, then you'd be left with replacing the sink. Is this an under mount or farmhouse sink?

I just love, love, love that verdigris patina, and have done lots of it. I do it about the same as kudzukween....I use a sea sponge, and I've done it with products from Lowes - they have a product from Modern Options, Inc...comes in 16 oz bottles...and I have the Patina Blue, Patina Green, Guilded Gold and Copper Topper....worked really well to use the blue AND green. The blue is really more what I consider turquoise. And I like the addition of a little of the gold in there, too. I usually start with a solid coat of one of them, and then sponge on the other colors until I have the desired effect.

Also, I have used some craft paints - I found a color called Laguna by Craft Barrel which I love as the green/blue base, and then I use Folk Art Metallic Solid Bronze and Folk Art Meallic Antique Gold sponged over them.

Don't know if you've sponged before, but if not...I dampen the sea sponge first, dip it in the paint, and then blot it before I apply it to the article.

Lyndalu, I just saw your post about "patina" and I am wanting to do some pieces for my garden. I did this years ago and can't recall what I used. I purchased Sophisicated Finishes, it's NOT the look I want. I have garden sign, some pieces around the pool that 'won't' be mosaic. Do you have any photos?
