I water these every day!!(tin flowers)

I found these last week at Dollar General,and thought they'd go good in this spot.They were $2.50 each. I really do water them every day,lol,waiting for some signs of rust! That's my tin cat and bird and wood and tin birdhouse rabbit-- minus the house,it fell off and 'one day' I'll fix it,luckily no one was living there at the time! That's cleome growing in the galvanized bucket. My sister is a teacher and one of the classes grew some for a yearly sale,and she bought them for me. Zinnias coming up behind the rusty rings,and about to plant a pentas in front of the rusty shovel. Guess I'm about out of room over in this spot! Oh and got some orange and yellow celosia to add to the red in my fireplace grate to the right of the cleome.Also, that's the mason jar candleholder my DH made me last year.

Those flowers are really nice, I like the colors but I do understand why you water them.

It is a good thing to tie fertilizing lightly to watering. Usually the more water you use, the more fertilizer will be used as well. As howelbama said, allow significant run off and that will help purge excess salt buildup.

If you're root pruning when you repot, and the roots of your plant only occupy the upper couple of inches of the soil mass, it might be best to water daily for a few days until roots begin to colonize the lower reaches of the soil. After that, there really won't be much difference in watering frequency between a well-aerated bark-based soil (like the 5:1:1 mix) and the gritty mix. For a while, there was a campaign of intentional disinformation being waged against the well-aerated soils so often discussed here. GW eventually made some 'adjustments' and those waging the campaign were prevented from doing so, and things have been rather peaceful since. Still, some residual fallacies linger, and to some degree the disinformation continues on other forums - usually by one or two individuals, neither of which have any experience using the gritty mix. What Al said above is true. The fact of the matter is, when you take steps to improve aeration and eliminate as much perched water as possible, the reduction in water retention means more frequent watering. You can't have it both ways, except to the extent that the gritty mix uses ingredients that allow you to ADJUST water retention by increasing the volume of particles that hold water internally (the Turface). That way, you sacrifice very little in the aeration offered in macro-pores, so it's a healthy way to increase water retention. You really need to weigh the pluses against the minuses and decide if the gritty mix is for you. If grower convenience is more important than plant health, you might want to stick with a more water-retentive mix. I would say that the year round average watering interval of established plants in the gritty mix will range from every 2-6 days, with by far the largest % falling in the every 3-4 day slot. Al

If I'm to understand you right, you would only be keeping them in the garage during the overnight hours? Otherwise, their whole lives, from germination forward, would be spent outside in direct sun and exposed to the elements? If that's case, hardening off shouldn't be required. Plants sprout and grow in direct sun outside all the time, in fact, that's how they are designed. The only reason we need to harden off is because plants grown indoors grow for significant periods (often many weeks) without any exposure at all, and therefore, are much more weak, or tender then those that have had a much tougher life of germinating, sprouting, and growing in the outdoors. Edit to add: I have done this with cool weather plants like lettuce. Often times here on the Colorado Front Range "spring" means a day of 70F with an overnight low of 19F and snow, then 70F again the next day. By the time night temps are finally above the mid 30's, and heavy blankets of snow are not longer a weekly threat, the day time temps are already soaring towards and through the 80's. I sow the lettuce in trays and put them outside from morning to night time that way I can get them started without taking up room under the lights or having to worry about hardening them off. Like faerycat, my problem isn't so much "rattiness". It's sloppiness, lol. I just never seem to get around to doing the things that need to be done in spring. The weeding, mulching, transplanting, etc., that, when done early, helps lower the maintenance throughout the summer. So, since it's not done early, by this time, there are beds which I'm just getting around to, and man oh man, are they a mess! Which makes me lose motivation. Sometimes I just sit and stare at them, thinking about what needs to be done, and about what I didn't do, and how I should have done it - and there goes any time I had to actually do anything, lol! But luckily for my own sanity, I can pick out the bright spots in these messes. I can appreciate the plants I planted on purpose, lol, in amongst the tallest weeds, or I can visually separate clashing colors from plants I meant to move because they didn't go well together, etc. The way I look at it, if I didn't (and don't) have the time to organize and maintain things the way they are, I certainly don't have time to rip things out and start again! :) Dee

Looks nice! I think rusty flowers will look great, too!

I wonder if our DG still has those flowers? I remember seeing them when they first put them out and I liked them but I didn't think January was a good time of year to be buying garden junk! LOL I check their garden stuff each time I make a trip down there but I think they put the flowers in a weird spot if I remember correctly.

Very nice picture. You can never have too much!!LOL! Maybe if you sand some of the paint off they will rust faster.

I love your flowers and the candleholder. I have to go to dg today in hopes they have some here. I was thinking about making some from tin cans but a little hesitant....afraid of cutting myself. Much better to buy them! I don't garden so well in band-aids.

Thank you for the nice compliments :) Here is a close up of the mason jar luminaries. My DH made them with 4 long strands of wire. He made a loop of the 4 strands to hang it from,and set the first jar inside the strands and tightened it by twisting the wires under the jar,and wrapped a shorter piece of wire around the twist.He did the next two jars the same way. We filled the jars partway with sand,and set candles inside them. The zinc lids came with the jars,I only keep them on the jars when we're not using them to keep the rain out. It's lasted outside for a year,it looks like it will last a lot longer,makes a beautiful hanging light outside. I saw one on HGTV, I think it was Decorating Cents,and he copied it for me. I hope you can see from these close up pics.
