What media is best to root cuttings?

What is good to use to root cuttings? I root some cuttings in water, and those work just fine (philodendron, wandering jew, pothos, etc).
But there are others that seem like they would do better to root in something else.
I have on hand perlite (2 different sizes), vermiculite (fine), pumice, and potting soil. I also have rooting hormone.

Some of the cuttings I am trying to root are peperomia, persian shield, arrowhead plant (these have aerial roots attached), and lavender (I've made 10 attempts at lavender, and had only one succeed).

I use Vermiculite only...

I surround a small clay pot within a bigger pot with it...

The hole on the bottom of the small pot is block and filled with water so it keeps the vermiculite on the outside evenly moist at all times..the small clay pot acts like a wick.

I just stick my cuttings right into the vermiculite and have almost 100% success rate at rooting them..

Can you keep your cuttings warm and provide good indirect sunlight? That is also key.

I typically use my potting medium, which is very fast draining and coarse textured. I also like to use vermiculite and I like to use perlite, but not together.

But I'd like to emphasize that the actual techniques are just as important as the medium you choose for propagation. Cuttings should be made at a certain time of year (depending on the kind of plant), they need to cut at the right location on the stem, they should be a certain length, they should be prepared properly before inserting.

Aftercare is important, too. Moisture levels are important, making the reason for a highly porous medium all the more important.

So, Deva....since you've tried ten times to root lavender, what's your usual method? How can we help? I'm sure that those of us who enjoy some success with our propagation would be glad to share some 'tricks'. Mike already has. :-)

I think the best time to prune in areas with freeze danger is in spring just before or as growth begins. I think this is too early in zone 7. I'd take cuttings for rooting 2-4 weeks before growth begins. Then they may need to be buried or stored in a cool place until rooting. It depends on whether you can control temperature or are reliant on nature, they need warmth to root rapidly. I'm not an expert on rooting grapes but have done it many times. Usually by just planting them where I wanted a vine, covering until spring, and then uncovering the top bud. This works but there are ways that result in much higher % takes. The key to rooting them is getting callus formation first. This works best at warm temperature, just the right moisture level, and rooting hormone. The cutting needs to be fully turgid but not wet. Some experts callus them in moist sand. This months Good Fruit Grower has an article on rooting grape cuttings. I've never used rooting hormone so that's not essential.

I live near Tarpon Springs, FL, a largely Greek community. Using cuttings, I now have two brown fig trees, four black fig trees (from Greece) and two white fig trees (from Greece I am told). I grew them all from cuttings. No idea what varieties they are. I've been reading the forums about how to grow figs from clippings. My family in Louisiana always had figs, so allow me to share how we do it. I bring a jar of water out to the tree, and using simple shears, I cut a few foot-long limbs. I immediately put them in the jar, take it inside, and put it in the kitchen window. For three weeks, we keep the jar topped up as the water drops. After three weeks, the leaves have all fallen off, but down in the water, we find a lot of little white bumps on each cutting. Then we take potting soil or potting mix, and just pot them. In weeks, the buds begin to leaf. Oddly, one of my white fig cuttings produced a fig while still in the water. The leaves dropped but the fig remained. Now potted, the tiny fig tree is quite a sight with it's one growing fig. Anybody wanting to see this oddity may email me for a picture. You might then also tell me what varieties I have. no matter what you buy.. use the link to sterilize it first.. no matter what is claimed on the bag ... pure peat is good for just about nothing.. other than mixing with other things ... in my non-professional experience ... when i did some hardwood cuttings in one gal milk jugs with one gal bags over them.. i used straight perlite.. which i had sterilized.. along with the jug [the rest with 10% bleach] .. the bag [i did presume a new bag was sterile].. and all tools .... and some bottom heat ... here is a pic without knowing what you are doing.. when.. nor how.. its really hard to give you the type of answer you want: no-BS style of answer .... if they are rooted ... get them out.. remove all the peat.. and get them into a cactus type mix if they are shrubs/trees/conifers.... these type of plants.. once they have roots.. like a bit of water ... and then drainage.. which pure peat does not .... even if they remain in a humidity chamber ... in other words.. the rooting media.. is not the same media to use with rooted stock.. nor the same media to use once you start potting them up ... ken Here is a link that might be useful: link

Potting mix is mostly pine bark (composted at least to some degree, though sometimes our potting mix was still composting, which used to drive me batty). It also holds fertiliser, which is not suitable for a cutting mix. Cutting mixes should contain no fertiliser. Cutting mix holds air and water, probably in higher amounts than a potting mix. And it also acts as a 'holder'. It anchors the cuttings. Plus, it allows roots to travel through it, as though they were growing in the ground. I mention this because I do not like to root things in water. The roots have no 'structure' to them when you take the cutting from the jar. They just all stick together. When you empty a pot of rooted cuttings which have been rooted in a good cutting mix, you can shake the mix from the roots very well, in gentle motions. This allows you to then pot up that cutting with its roots nicely splayed. Of course, some people just shove them in - I've seen it. It makes my head hurt. I'd rather waste time (in their book) and arrange the young plant to my liking. Potting mix just won't give you (or more correctly, the plant) as good a root system.

My usual method? lol. Well, I'm just beginning to learn about the "right" ways to raise plants, so there have been a lot of "not right" ways that I've tried to do things!

I HAVE rooted a few pieces of rosemary, but for some reason the lavender is giving me trouble. I also had SOME success with catnip, sage, various vines, possibly peperomia, a couple sedums, and LOTS of jade leaves.

I just took some cuttings (a few inches long? Some were probably shorter), took the leaves off the bottom, dipped in rooting hormone, and put in soil (probably the same stuff I made for my square foot type beds outside). The first few failed miserably, so the ones I tried after that, I put a plastic bag over top, and they lasted for longer, but eventually died off. One, surprisingly, worked!

Let's see, what else? I tried to keep the moisture on the low side. Also, they were outside in a bright area, but very little direct sun.

As far as light for my current/future cuttings, have east windows that are partially blocked by trees, and a west facing picture window (that most of my high-light plants are in.)
I tend to put cuttings either on my kitchen counter (low to moderate light), or the east facing window sill (some direct light in the morning, but not much), or another east facing windowsill where the sun is mottled by a maple tree. (this is where I complain that the tree is blocking my sun. grrr)
The west facing window gets direct sun for a number of hours in the afternoon. When we HAVE sun, that is (I live in Vancouver).

For my Persian Shields (that are my big project right now), I did make sure to keep a node for the roots to grow from. I have a couple in water, and one in some sort of potting soil mix. They look good for now, but it's only been a week or so. I also have them under a plastic produce bag (the type that grapes and cherries come in- with holes all through them).
