Glad I grow my potatoes under straw

User

After the frost the other night, I pulled the straw back and got the latest potatoes. About 90% of the tubers are easily visible under the straw, on the surface or poking out of the earth.

But there's the other 10% or so that wander off and bury themselves beneath the surface, so I get out my potato fork and stark digging for them. Invariably, from time to time, the tine comes out with a tuber stuck on it, or I find a potato cut in half, sometimes hearing that ominous crunching sound.

My soil is heavy clay, and the digging is arduous. I can just imagine how many potatoes would be ruined if I had to dig them all, a foot down in trenches.

All the potatoes I can spot under the straw are sound and whole.
