Texas Longhorn cowpeas
Comments (8)Found 2 descriptions of this variety in SSE 2007 yearbook (members only catalog), but it might help you find something that is similar or help with internet search. Both listings state that they taste like boiled peanuts, but neither describe a light-colored bean. One thinks it might be another name for Big Red Ripper, as they are so similar; Lists original source as South Carolina Foundation Seed Assn in Clemson, SC The other describes the variety as having 15 - 18 large peas in a 9 - 10 inch pod, and the peas as maroon with black eyes, and he got his seed from the guy who says they may be the same as Big Red Ripper. Hope this helps in your search. greentongue...See MoreKentucky Red Cowpea
Comments (11)As I recall, the pods are about 8-9" long and somewhat flattened. They are more solid in their construction than a lot of other cowpeas. The vines like to spread across the ground. But when they find support, they do climb. Sandhill Preservation Center received their start from me. This evening, I'll try to remember to take a picture of the seed and post it here. It's a very nice pea....See MoreCowpea Question?
Comments (11)I have some peas that that make a good bit of bushy vine with runners up to maybe 6' - 7' long with lavender colored flowers the pods are a green color that lighten to a light yellow when they dry. The pods get 16 - 18 peas in them. The peas turn a light tan after they dry. I like them dry as well as when green shelled. The peas are not big but are not small either comparable with Black Eyes or Purple Hulls. They load up with a lot of peas. Me and everyone that I have shared them with say they are the best peas they have ever tasted. The closest I can find that looks like them is the Penny Rile. A friend said that they look like Clay peas. I got them from a neighbor who found them growing in his Purple Hull pea patch. They wouldn't pick them because the peas weren't purple hull so left them in the patch. When I ask him about the green podded peas he told me I could have them because they would not pick them. I picked them and cooked some of them and thought they tasted great so have grown them for the last 6 years. I just would like to find out what kind they are. I know it would be impossible for you to say what they are without seeing them but I can't help but wonder what they are. I appreciate your entrust . The pictures in the seed advertisements make the Iron & Clay peas look kind of blue. I have a friend who grows Penny Riles told me they look just like his Penny Riles. I guess I should just enjoy the peas and not worry about what they are called. A friend I gave some to called them Poor Man peas....See MoreInsecticide for cowpea curculio
Comments (1)Several available insecticides work if you can get the timing right. Carbaryl (Sevin) will work, but its life is so short that it get the ones working today, but uneffective on the ones that move in tomorrow. Malathion is more effective over several days. Here they seem to be worse early. Planting for September harvests often are minimally or non stung by the curculio. Cyluthrin (Bayer Bioadvanced) should also work....See MoreMacmex
