I Planted Radish Watermelon from Saved Seed
Comments (4)I put the raccoon into the shed Wednesday evening because rain was in the forecast. Saturday morning was dry and a squirrel had dug where my Sweet Treat carrots were planted. The raccoon came back out and today (Sunday) I heard a squirrel making a racket in the far corner of the yard. He seemed upset about the raccoon being there. I think I will leave him out even in the rain from now on. On a side note it looks like a pair of hawks has moved into an abandoned rooftop across the street from me. I think they're Cooper's hawks but they seem rather large. It will be interesting if they nest up there....See MoreConfused about harvesting and saving seed from beans
Comments (4)Harvest constantly only really applies to harvest as snap beans. Once the beans get full grown as either green shellies or dry as in seed aor dry beans, the plant has done its thing. Especially true of bush beans. Dry means just that the pod will be dry. Leathery the pod will have changed color, beans will be full, and the pod will be thin and a texture reminding one of thin leather. At that point the the beans will contain a lot moisture, be considerably larger than their dry state, and be easy to shell for green shellies. For snap beans the pods are harvested before the beans form. You eat pods not beans....See MoreQuestions about saving seeds to plant next year
Comments (2)I believe, with nasturtiums you just dry the seed and save it in a cool, dry location for next year. For the beans: you should shell them from their pods, dry them to the point that you can't dent the seed with a fingernail (I dry them a couple days longer than that.), seal them in an airtight container and freeze them for at least two days. Freezing will kill weevil eggs, which seem ALWAYS to be present in such seed. After two days in the freezer you can remove them and store the seed away from heat sources. Remember, when taking the seed from the freezer, not to open the container for several hours. This allows temps to equalize and avoids condensation on your seed. I once ruined a batch of beans by peeking at them before they had warmed up. It was only for a moment, and then I replaced the lid. But the following spring, when I opened the jar, all the seed had gone moldy. George...See Moreis this true about watermelon seed saving?
Comments (3)I was eating a "seedless" watermelon and found a mature seed. The following spring I planted it. I had glorious vines, flowers and eventually a watermelon. It looked exactly the same as the parent. That fall, when I opened it, not only did it have ridiculously little red pulp but it had so many seeds that nothing was edible anyway!...See Morerayrose
