Hi,

I just started all free garden club. Mostly veggies. All though I started it not sure of how to operate it.

May not be a right forum but would appreciate your feed backs.

Right, now I have 2 members including me.

Talk to your members. What do they want to hear about, learn, do?

Sounds like a great idea! I joined one that was $15.00 a year. They didn't teach much that I enjoyed. I quit. We had a covered dish lunch after each meeting, but that got to be too much too. Maybe you can ask people what they want to learn? We had a plant swap and sometimes a seed exchange. I would have lectures according to what time of year it was. Good luck!

A few years ago I started a garden club at the company where I work and I also belong to a more "formal" club. Neither is what I was really looking for, which is total gardening addicts like yourselves! I get my fix for talking to other plant lovers by hanging out here every evening for a little while, participating in the plant swap that was started on the ohio valley gardeners forum and sharing with a couple of good friends. My work garden club let me meet some great people and one who I now count as a good friend who is as interested in gardening as I am. So for that reason and some other cool people in the club I'm glad I started it. However, I found out that most of the people who joined did not have much experience. That's fine but they expected me to lead every meeting. They had great ideas for projects and speakers but wanted me and one or two other people to do all the work. Not my idea of a good time. Plus every time we tried to organize something during off-work hours only a handful of people would attend. I'd hang it up but I feel obligated now to keep it alive. It has been better this year since I told them I would only serve as president (the company requires we have officers) if other members would volunteer to take a meeting. People signed up for a month and they are responsible for getting the speaker, etc. That has worked out better than I ever thought. I hope next year they will volunteer again but I'm afraid many will view it as a one time commitment. The formal club has very little gardening and a whole lot of rules and flower arranging shows, etc. There are some nice people but I only attend the meetings when it has to do with gardening. I skip the ones on floral arranging and flower shows. One of the perks of belonging to the club is a good discount from my favorite local nursery on annuals in the Spring. That makes it worth it to me. Sorry for my long answer but since I have started a club I wanted to let you know what you might be in for in terms of work load and expectations of other members. The type of club you want is my dream garden club! Good luck, I hope it works out for you.

What state would that be in??? There's a Suffolk Co here in NC. Try reposting but always say in the heading what state you are referring to. It's the only way others in your state can find you. Good luck. PS: It would also be a terrific idea to edit your registration page to show your state and zone automatically within your post heading. It would have helped here. Happy gardening! It's not too late to try a Fall swap.

I sure do wish you good luck on your endeavor! I've attached a link to the National Garden Club site, from which you can visit all sorts of state sites. You certainly do NOT have to join these large organizations to have your own club, but some of them might have some good tips for you. I've been a frequent speaker at the garden clubs in coastal SC, where they are saturated with these organizations. ALL of the chapters were state and national members. All paid dues. (If you charge dues, what will the money be used for?) Most of them took turns meeting at members' homes, although the larger groups required facilities. If you are interested in getting together with neighbors only, I would avoid the hassle of being too organized. However, if you do your homework, you may be surprised at the response. Your local newspaper will be helpful in getting the word out...call them and ask that a reporter to a story on the subject. Here is a link that might be useful: National Garden Club

Though not a garden club these free plant swaps in Redmond, WA are a gathering place for gardeners to network & share plants through the seasons.

Winter Seed Sowing

Saturday January 7, 2012, 10 AM to Noon (indoors)
-Right after the holidays in the cold dark of winter, we get together with our treasure troves of seeds, and dirt and pots and labels, to winter-sow perennials, trees, shrubs. These pots of seeds then go outside for cold treatment which breaks the seedsÃ¢ÂÂ dormancy. You wonÃ¢ÂÂt believe the great results! Come spring they germinate in profusion. For this event, potting soil is provided. Bring your pots, seeds, labels to share. You can also divide and repot houseplants at this event.

-It may still feel wintry, but spring is on the way. March is an excellent month to move dormant plants. Annual seeds can be traded for spring planting. ItÃ¢ÂÂs time to dream big for the coming summer.

Victory Garden Vegi-Swap Saturday June 2, 2012, 10 AM to Noon
-Whether you feel the budget crunch or just want to grow your own delicious healthy food, the vegi-swap is offered so we can exchange and share vegetable seeds and plant starts for our own Beat-the-Economy Victory Gardens.
