birdhouse gourd

This is not nearly as creative as most of you guys, but it feels good to finally hang SOMETHING for spring. I cant even put the chairs out yet, as snow is predicted again. My basement is getting really full of projects and I am itching to get back in the dirt. Hopefully the birds will like the new house. It is the first gourd I have attempted to carve out and paint. That is really cute!! I know what ya mean about your basement getting too full!! I'm having the same problem. lol I even have some things up in the dining room. And it's starting to get in the way. Come on spring!!!

The lemon tomato was something I found at a local nursery. They had free plants that didnt sell during the spring and it was one of the only healthy ones.

I have birdhouse gourd seeds, but they dont grow in a window. I saw these growing in a neighbors yard and she did have dozens of vines. I was going to grown these and just havent done it. Best way to weatherproof birdhouse gourd?

Hi Sandlady. I use a one part epoxy paint on my gourd birdhouses. It's called Epoxy II. The manufacturer says its good for 10 years. I brush it on and it is self-leveling. When it dries, its like a coating of glass with no brush marks. I have several that have been out for months and they look the same as the day I put them out. I also burn pix on them and then paint with acrylics. This epoxy goes right over them and protects them from fading also. The down side is that its somewhat expensive, $60 @ gal, and you have to buy it through a dealer but its well worth it. The Amish and Mennonites use it for their buggys, so you know its gotta be good. If interested, do a google search on Epoxy II and that will lead you to the manufacturer and dealers. Gene

I really love the Folksy but elegant look of that birdhouse. Nice rich colors you have great taste!
Don't whine too much about the weather.
I don't get my fun projects done because we have year round mowing,trimming,weeding raking,planting,,,, well you get the idea. But I'll still take Florida any time!!!!

Love the color! Did you use Gourdmaster dyes? It almost looks like their rich mahogany. I love that stuff! It brings out the beautiful pattern on the gourd but makes it an outstanding color - almost like richly stained wood. Great job!

This was a drum I made out of a gourd and used the Gourdmaster dye on. I can't remember which color but it made it look like stained wood.

I love it:) I wish I had some gourds for birdhouses. Last year I planted some, and each gourd got large enough to be a birdhouse but then they started rotting from the top. I need to research gourds a little more before I plant them again,lol! Same thing happened to my loofah. I was so sad.
