Old Cracked Wedding Gift/Bird Feeder Totem

Here is a feeder made from a repaired Soap dish that was a gift to Hubs and I many years ago. (Who's counting?) The pole is made from handpainted candlesticks, then attached to glass plates and a large glass light shade.

There is room left on the glass to learn to mosaic in the future.

oh Susie... anyone can mosaic... I agree...that clear at the bottom is screaming for mosaic!!! Your totem is darling... I like them more when they are useful like that...

Goldenpond, You have been singing all week. Sounds like you are feeling the Christmas Spirit!!! Pray some my way. Thanks for ya'lls kind comments. luna, I am ashamed to say that I let the "old woman", who has moved in here, go to Lowes and buy Plumbers goop (good with copper) and some other all purpose metal glue (and now 'she' cant remember). I think I ended up using the plumbers goop. The heaviest thing about the metal structure is the birds on top! They were bought at a resale shop and have been in my china cabinet for years doing nothing. Now they have a life serving seed to live birds. They are so much happier. Robert, The structure height, from the porch up, including the large hose pot, is 2 1/2 feet tall. Just to the left of the feeder is a circulating fountain for their water supply. I put shepard hooks of several different sizes around that side of the porch for perches. In the morning and early evening dozens of birds visit the porch. The bottom is a copper tray, then a brass and copper flower pot, then a brass bowl, and finally a metal tray. The bottom tray fits perfectly over the plaster planter that holds my garden hose. Some people do not like what happens with the metal patinas. I can tell you that when they are polished they are bright gold brass and bright copper. By next year they will probably have a blue-green patina.

Hi Everyone! I'm not a member of Cracked Pot Gardeners but have been enjoying reading all of your posts. I was wondering what winter seeding is and how you do it. I live in southern michigan and am getting anxious for spring. I've been planning my veggie garden for this year and also my herb garden. Now I just need to plant something. I noticed someone mentioned her hubby was going to try planting in a sandwich baggie. I am so curious about this. Thanks for any help and sorry to butt into your exchange club.

Bob, Great Shot, glad to see some of your finches are already molting to their summer breeding plumage, that means spring is coming,,,Hurrah!! Fortunately we got a nice sunny 35degF day today so I was able to get a shot from my bedroom window showing my whole feeder setup. The first shot is looking east from my bedroom window. In this shot you can see my seed hopper and suet feeders on the Maple tree, which is 60ft from my camera position. This location is working very well because many of the birds roost in the Maple tree during the day. Although you can barely see it in the photo about 20ft to the right of the Hopper there is a 65ft high pine tree that affords great cover for the smaller birds. Ten feet to the left of the Maple tree there is a small Butternut tree that is a favorite roosting place for the Morning Doves. I generally see upwards of 35 doves in that tree each morning. Another 15 ft to the left is a second 60ft Pine tree and behind the feeder sight you can see an 18 acres open meadow. You can see the woods are the far side of the meadow. That woods extends for about a square mile and it is mostly old stand hardwoods. Across the road to the left of this photo is another 300 acre hardwood stand, some new growth near the road, but old stand hardwoods from about 100 feet off the road. In the foreground to the left you can see my old garment hanger with the Niger & mixed seed tubes. On the left end on top you can see the plastic bucket lid that I use for a platform feeder. From my vantage point I generally use a 300mm lens to shoot birds on the hopper, suet feeder or on the ground below the hopper, while I use a 200mm to shoot close ups of the birds on the garment rack feeders. As you can see, all the birds at my feeders seem to play nice and I see very little competition.

This is a lovely piece. The colors in the pole is marvelous. It really pops against the white birds & clear glass. And then you added a clear textured glass for more punch. You did a great job putting the different pieces together.

Wow Susie...I have looked at all of your posts and you have been one very busy girl. I love them all! I think my favorite is the teacup feeded and this one here...but they are all so wonderful that I can't decide which is my absolute favorite. And I thought I had a busy weekend...

I love your little lovebirds! You did a great job matching up the candlesticks so they look like one pole. I was going to agree with emtnest about mosaicing the bottom but I thought if you plant around it, the plants would cover up the bottom portion. It looks awesome the way it is or with mosaic pieces that match the colors in the candlesticks! Great job! It looks wonderful in your garden!
