Glow in the Dark Bowling Ball?

So, I scored a nearly new GITD BB at a yard sale this morning. Don't know if it would still GITD if I covered it with marbles? I've put it on a stand in the yard to see how/if it glows or if it needs a black light to glow or something.

What do you think?

It probably does not need a black light to glow but just sun light. Leave it outside in the sun all day and check it out at night. However, if you cover it with marbles, I doubt if it would glow after.

Welcome Beecharmer2! This is such a fun forum with the nicest of people! If you look on the GardenJunk homepage, you'll see "FAQ" at the top of the page. It tells how to make some of the cool projects you see on the forum. There's one for marbles on bowling balls...same idea as pennies. I'll post the link below. I haven't grouted mine but I bet someone else will speak to that. This was my first bowling ball. So easy and FUN! When you do a bowling ball, have a container you can sit it in. I used an old heavy pan. The GEII is a silicone sealant. I found mine in the glue department at Lowe's. Have fun! Post a picture if you create a Bowling Ball masterpiece!!! They dont make this out of radioactive substances anymore do they? Will always remember the can of glow in the dark paint my dad kept in the garage and all the fun we kids had getting into it and painting stuff with it. Of course now I'm a ticking time bomb healthwise-LOL. Ah those were the days (50s-60s). Kids cant have any fun these days!

With the clear glass hanging ornaments, you could pull off the top and pour the paint inside and swirl it around till it's all covered. Then, let it set upside down over something, even the paint bottle, to let the extra drip out, so you don't waste it. With acrylic paints you can water them down slightly, I don't know if watering down the glow in the dark paint will loose some of it "glow" or not. We have a small Joann's here in town and they don't carry a whole lot of supplies. You might do better at a larger Joann's or Michael's, Hobby Lobby, or even a scrapbook store (I don't do scrap booking so I wouldn't know) in finding the paint. I got mine at Michael's around Halloween time. You can more than likely find it online also at craft any of those sites, or a craft supply site online. I like your idea of hanging them from a tree. Use fishing line if possible and that would look like they were floating! Oh No, more UFO sightings in your neighborhood!!! LOL. A little dab of glue on the top rim might keep the moisture out of them. Hope you'll post pics when you're done. Sal

For the longest, very longest, honestly the longest lasting bowling ball, use fortified thinset (acrylic admix already added). Don't buy the premixed. Mix it yourself in small batches (butter parts of the ball or each tile - whatever works for you). You can get white or gray so your transparent glass will pop. Sand the ball lightly before you start. Grout with an exterior grade grout and seal the grout when dry. Cement products just seem to last the longest outdoors (in my climate, which is zone 5 - in Wisconsin). CLEAR Silicone (GE Silicone II for doors and windows) is a VERY close second and much easier to use than thinset (IMHO). However, that means one has to paint the bowling ball some color amenable to you which also means you are now mosaicing on a thin layer of paint rather than the bowling ball itself . . . . Have fun deciding!

Dulcimer, I'm thinking it's probably going to be the type paint they used that makes the ball glow in the dark since bowling balls aren't normally exposed to lots of sunlight. I imagine if you cover it completely with marbles that you're going to lose the gitd effect. If you want it to glow, I would just leave the marbles off and leave the ball like it is... it's actually pretty just as it is :>)

dulci - it looks GREAT as is! I hope it does GITD for you at night! I just got 2 solar lights (small battery kind) at a TS for $3 & the first night they were changing colors from red, blue, green (spectra!) OMgosh, they were "crackled glass" & that's why I bought them (cause if the batteries didn't work, they were still pretty)...then found a switch to change them to "clear light"...so will see how they look tonight! So I hope your BB really GLOWS!!! Great find!

Loved seeing that dandelion green! (I can say that right now...not later!) And LOVE your daffodils! The BB stand is perfect! Enjoy! Jeanne S.

Oooooooooooo ... I like it just the way it is! But then I'm partial to sparkles. lol! I like the stand you have it on too. I can't wait to see daffodils blooming near here. Today was around 60 degrees and beautiful. Hopefully it won't be long. Thanks for the preview!

Well, it didn't glow in the dark. I suspect it needs a black light for its glow. I will leave it as it is, maybe wax it up so its shiny, it is a pretty ball and on the stand, you can't really tell what it is. lol Darn it, I wanted a glowing sphere in the yard..lol

Hey dulci, I just saw that Krylon makes a glow in the dark spray paint. I want to try it out soon as I can get some.
That bowling is really pretty, I'm sorry it didn't glow for you tho.

I couldn't believe it when I saw a gitd post! I did a gitd experiment late afternoon yesterday that I'll report on after tonight.
I like the bb very much how it is. But it might still glow with marbles if they are clear. You could test it by carfully laying a mesh bag full of clear marbles on top of it and see how its affected. You'd lose that sparkly effect I would think tho. And just don't coat it with uv resistant urethane.

Cool ball...too bad it didn't glow in the dark for you. It will fade if it's left in the sun, so you may want to put it in a shadier area, or spray it with a UV blocking polyurethane or you can just do something different with it after it fades.
