growing garlic in pots

Campanula UK Z8

White rot on our allotment site has made growing all bulbing alliums a risky, if not fatal proposition - leeks and spring onions are OK but globe onions and, most painfully, garlic, is a non-starter despite various experimental efforts using my old cold frame, importing new soil and so on and so forth - all failures.....and, as usual, unable to resist the new season's fat bulbs, I have half a dozen garlic heads which I am thinking of growing in pots at home, well away from the fungal issues at the plot. So, having no natural soil at all in my home garden, I am wondering if anyone else grows garlic as a container plant and if so, what size pots, what medium, and how many cloves to a pot do you sow. I have a stock of deep 5litre (1 gallon) pots and an even greater number of bigger, 15 and 25 litre pots....but also limited floor space....so need to get the highest yield from the smallest space possible (if you get my drift).
