Have you tried doing some research (on Google if nowhere else)?

I grow a Heliconia Rostrata in the ground but then I'm in Florida. I have mine in a sunny location but it will also grow in part shade. It grows about 6-8 feet tall and spreads. I started with one plant and now have at least 2 dozen. It blooms on the previous years growth and then dies. The stalk you have now will bloom next year so no matter how the leaves start to look, don't cut the plant back or you won't see any flowers.After it blooms, you can cut the stalk to the ground and by then,it should have sent out more plants. I've never had a Rostrata or a Bird of Paradise in a pot but I would treat them both the same.

Regine, thanks for the info..Since I live in IL, the Heliconia has to be grown in a pot..I placed in the upstairs bathroom where it'll get a good amount of humidity..also near a west window which is very bright.

I'm quite confused about the Chlorophytum..I went to Google like Lucy recommended, but didn't get much help there. I believe it's a deciduous plant, which is something I didn't want..LOL..I wish I could find more info on this plant..

I just use the standard fertilizer when I think about it. I have a nice clump of Heliconias in the corner of my yard and they start blooming in June and will quit in September. Each stalk just produces one bloom and then it dies, but I have new ones that keep coming up. Have you considered growing your Heliconias in the ground? It's too late to start now but there is a book called The Exotic Garden by Richard Iversen which you might take a look at. He started a tropical garden at the State University of New York in Farmingdale which has been a great success. The only thing you have to do is to dig up some of the plants you want to keep and overwinter them in your house or garage.I grew up in Chicago so I know how hot it can get and there is no reason why some of the tropical plants wouldn't do well in Illinois.
Your Chorophytum is an unusual plant and I'm sure the web site I found is the same one you did but I'm posting the link anyway.It looks like a really neat plant.

Hi Regine..thanks for the site..I still don't know if I'm happy or unhappy buying this type of chlorophytum..LOL..if it's deciduous, this could lead to problems. I'd rather have evergreen plants..but we'll see.

Next spring I'll plant the Heliconia in the garden and see how it does..do you reccommend full sun, med, or shade?
What's the lowest temp helioonia survives? In other words, what month would be best digging up and overwintering?
Actually, I have grown tropicals in the garden..I had a palm, banana and citrus rootstock, but the cicadas took care of those trees this summer..sigh. among many perrenials..And living in the sw burbs of Chicago, we had millions..

The Rostrata can take a lot of sun although I have seen it sold here as a shade plant. I had one growing in the shade for awhile, it was about 7 feet tall but did not seem to bloom as much as the ones in the sun.Last winter, we did have a few nights where the temperatures dropped down to the low 40's and the plants did fine.I would certainly dig them up before you have a frost.
