building a raised bed isolated from the surrounding garden

Hi,

Our last raised vegetable bed was invaded by roots from the surrounding trees in our garden, and so now we want to build a new bed for growing organic veggies that will be totally isolated from the surrounding garden, and also be long-lasting. The issue that seems to be the most challenging is to how to create a base for the bed that won't rot out too quickly, and keeps the bed up and away from thirsty tree roots. Does anyone have any ideas? Using cinderblocks, not as a frame, but as an actual base? Thanks!
