Schefflera with mushrooms and leaves growing from base

I have a Schefflera in the house that is doing great. It is growing everyday and new shoots everywhere. There are some shefflera leaves that grow from the very base (like out of the soil). Other than these small leaves at the bottom, it is a nice tree-like shape with long trunk before the leaves start. If I leave these be at the bottom, will it completely start filling up the lower portion? If I want to leave it the same shape, should I keep trimming the bottom leaves?

Also there is a lone mushroom or two that pops up from the soil every few days and I simply pick them off. Is there anything else I should do about this?
