A Grizzly Bear for Charity

This counts as garden junk because I so wanted it for my garden! A few years back my class worked with an artist to paint a fiberglass bear for the Ronald McDonald House. Artists painted bears and they were placed all over the city. Our class bear was placed in front of the Spokane City Hall. Spokane is about 30 miles from us. The bears were auctioned off and all proceeds went to house children with cancer and their families at the Ronald McDonald House near the area hospitals.

My class bear was reaffled off and lots of money was raised. I bought more tickets, wanting that bear as a centerpiece for my gardens but I didn't win! (sadness) I posted a link below so you can see all of the bears. Click on "Bear Slide Show"...mine is the bear that is called, "Island of the Kodiak". ENJOY! Wouldn't he have looked GRAND in our garden?

Oh, to give you an idea as to the size of the bear, here is a picture of the sculpture with our daughter in front of the bear (cool shades) and me behind it. Isn't he GRRRREAT?! Bear Hugs! Kirk

When I was a kid, my brother worked as a driver for a nursery and he used to bring home small cacti on occasion. One that I was particularly fond of was one known as a 'Grizz;y Bear' cactus. Kate, you're probably thinking of the Tasmanian tiger, which was the size of a large dog. They're considered to be extinct, though there have been some reported "sightings" which are unproven. Check out the link below it will give you some info, and a short Quicktime movie of the last Tas Tiger known to be in existence. The tasmanian devil (not quite as depicted in the looney-tunes cartoons) is much smaller, has a ferocious bite and even more ferocious growl. It's bite can crunch through bone with ease. I reality the Devil is quite a cute, shy little critter and is usually active only at night. Devils are currently under threat from a cancerous disease that manifests itself as a facial tumour,resulting in death of the animal. In an attempt to save the animal from extinction, a healthy disease free population is in the process of being established offshore on an isolated island, as there is no known cure or cause for the disease as yet. Grizzly Bears Predict Early Spring

In Texas, they use Bee Cave Bob, who is an armadillo, and he predicted an early spring. I don't put my faith in any of those animal predictions, and just consider them entertainment, not weather forecasting. Considering it has been in the 60s and 70s here in our county a lot the last few weeks and the spring wildflowers in our yard are starting to bloom, and the fruit trees are on the verge of blooming, I'd predict an early spring based solely on what I am experiencing here. It was 60 degrees here when I went outside at 7:30 a.m. but, this is Oklahoma, and I know good and well it could be 40 degrees, or 20 degrees, on any morning in February. Maybe what we are seeing is not an early spring, but just an abnormally-warm period that could change any day now. I just don't trust the weather here. Often a warm January or February is followed by a cold March so we all have to be careful and not let our guard down, or we could be dealing with frozen plants.

Sooo neat, Kirk, have you seen the "Cows on Parade" sculptures? These bears remind me of them. If not, google it. lots of neat cows too. I collect the little ones.

Wow...Kirk...your bear is so cool!! I sure wish you had gotten it for your yard, but just the fact it turned out so great is fantastic!!!!

We did the same thing with frogs here. Why frogs...I couldn't tell you! It never did make much sense to me, but they were all over Toledo!!!! Daughter Sheri collects frogs and wanted one in the worst way...but no go!! They went for too much!!

I'm glad you showed us these bears. They're pretty neat!

Lots of creative juices went into those bears!! Hope the artists did them for free!! How nice the money helps out families in need of a comfortable "close to hospital" place to live while their kids are getting treatments!! Are they heavy? You were going to put in your yard so I would think so. Thanks for showing the bears! Jan

The bears are really awesome, Kirk! I can see why you wanted that one so bad for your garden. It would have been a fantastic addition. I liked the one called "Luna." he-he

Sandy, don't ask me how ... but I remembered something about frogs and Toledo. I guess at one time Toledo was a big swamp area (the Great Black Swamp) and was known as Frogtown. I can see why they were reigning frogs! lol! I bet that was cute.

Milwaukee has had something similar. You'd think we would have a cow but nooooooooo we had beasties. They kind of looked like cows with short, stubby tails. Here is a picture of one that anyone could put their handprint on.

Wonder how much one of those would cost in shipping to Virginia??! Those are awesome! And yes, your classroom bear would have looked wonderful in your yard! Any way you could "highjack" him after a few weeks?

Thank you for the nice comments! I have seen the bear since at the business of the man who won him. Bigack, I've seen the "cows"! Too Cool! I've also seen horses that were done in a similar fashion. Luna... I LOVE the beasties! HOW COOL! (Bob looks like such a fun guy! I'm so glad he has you, and you have him!!!) Jan, the bear was not too heavy as he is made of fiberglass...just BIG and AWKWARD! It was a bugaboo trying to get him through the doors of our school building! Susiesunshine, I took a picture and framed it...keep it on my desk at school. Jiminy Crickets..those are fantastic !!! I would have loved to have " Sarge ". He would be a perfect addition since my son is a Sargeant with the Army !

Susan, Our son Tyler is a sargeant in the Army too!!!! He served two terms in Iraq and is now in Italy. Here's a few pictures of him in Iraq! I added a homecoming picture when he saw his little sister after two years away. (I cry just looking at that picture!) :o) Bear Hugs! Kirk

Wow, what great pics of the bears ... endless creativity! I was going to pick a favorite, then after each next pic, I kept getting a new favorite :-)

Luna, the beasties are so fun, Bob looks "so fun" too LOL.

Kirk and Carol ... how proud you must be of those great kids! Oreosmom too! The service man or woman, and their family sacrifice a lot. Thank God Tyler made it through those two tours in Iraq!!!

He'll probably enjoy his duty in Italy. Hubby was in Sicily after Vietnam, seemed to be a good place for them to sort of "decompress" before coming back to the States. Tyler is so handsome, makes us so proud of our military wherever they go! The pic of he and Olivia is heatwarming!

Oh Kirk.. now you've gone and done it.. that homecoming pic has me sitting here crying like a baby ! That is just so heart wrenching. What a handsome young man you and your wife have ! My son Jeremy is back in Iraq for the 2nd time,plus he was in Afghanistan for a year. I haven't been able to breathe for the last 4 years. He'll be going back to Ft.Drum when he gets home. New York's not all that far from Alabama. Hopefully, Tyler will be able to come back home soon. Keeping you and your family in my prayers and from one military mom to another, sending your wife a huge hug and a giant THANK YOU to Tyler !
