Waterslide Transfer Decal Paper

I found something to transfer images or words onto plant markers, watering cans or whatever.

I want to use ceramic plates to make plant marker signs and welcome to my Garden signs ect.. My problem was getting the lettering on the plate and it be weather proof as well. This decal paper lets you print it on the computer and apply it to the ceramic,wood, stone ect. and then coat it with oil based varnish. When I get my projects done I'll post some pictures.

You can Google and find different companys that make the waterslide decals.

Thanks for the info, I am wanting to transfer pictures to ceramic tiles and this seems like it would work. I had not heard of this before. Please post pics and let us see what you have done.

Hi, I just posted to the other thread about the fact that ink jet ink will fade out side and recommended having it done at a copy shop laser copier. Decoupage that I've had on my porch from ink jet art has faded terribly. Its funny cuz a lamp in a sunny window is ok. Its just so much brighter out side! There is also a thread on Crafts and decorations where christoph, who made the cutest bird house house numbers and sold thousands at craft fairs, warns of the same thing. I've posted a link to that thread. There is a hot link to his house numbers about 3 messages down, then he talks about how he does it and warns against ink jet a few messages after that.

Cute chair Linda. good idea! Printing for outdoor use: I believe that all ink jet printer ink fades over time. that is my only concern about anything printed being used outside. It would be better to use a laser printer if you have one or bring a flash drive with your work and decal paper to a copy shop and have them print it with a laser printer. (Or print what you want on a piece of paper and copy it onto the decal paper.) I've never used decals, but I know that ink jet color fades pretty quickly outside from experience. kathy

Karen - There are several ways to do this. I have NOT done either of the first two, but am fairly sure they will work. Just pick one and give it a try. Better yet, give both a try at the same time with similar pictures and see which you like better. Just be sure you get the box that is compatible with your printer (inkjet or laser).

Bella--I'd love to see the pics of yours, if you don't mind! John--I like the idea of painting the thing. I've had old vintage garden chairs powder coated. Sometimes I think my KA must have a passport it uses to mix a large batch of thick dough the way it shimmies for the door! I thought a commercial kind like this was supposed to be for heavy use. Now I'm considering something like Kate's mixer thread was discussing when I start baking bread again. It might not want to leave me the way my KA does. Nat--I like the idea of it in a pull-out on the top instead of the bottom like Jakabedy's. Melissa--Mine doesn't have a splatter guard. I know what you mean though about having to store it anyway. Macybaby--I don't want to cut into that peninsula space for two reasons--baking and buffet service. I NEED that space. Yours looks great! Thanks for the sourcing tip. Calimama--Yeah, I don't leave the kitchen with the mixer on. Florantha--That black object is my Gaggia espresso machine. The windows were put in a couple of weeks ago. I had considered an appliance garage/hutch there before (I think maybe you suggested it on another of my threds) to hide the Gaggia and still may do that. Putting the mixer there won't work as the baking area is on the opposite side of the kitchen. Will--I need power on that peninsula somewhere. The fridge panel is just that--a cabinet panel--so I can't put an outlet there even though that's the perfect spot. Desertsteph--Thanks for explaining. That makes sense. Joyce--A pullout sounds like a good way to go. Kashmi--I forgot about the decals! So cool, but I don't think it's really me. I like the toaster story!! Jill--Mine was stored a distance from the kitchen before so I don't think I used it as often because I didn't want to drag it out. I can see that if it were really handy, I'd use it more often. Your espresso machine sure dwarfs mine! Motodetroit--That could be the answer for me!! Some of those boxes are much too country for me, but I'm sure I could find the right one. I could leave it on the counter covered. Easy to use when necessary. Keeps the dust off. And then I could tuck it in the pantry when I need the buffet space! Perfect!! Thanks! Thanks for all the great ideas and experiences. It comes down to: Visibility/Accessibility--leaving it on the counter with a possible cover. Not my ideal, but easy to use and it doesn't take up base storage. Storage/Accessibility--using valuable base storage just to get it out of my view but having to lift it out to use, either with a lift or brute strength. Sounds like another form vs. function problem for me! ;)

I also have some of those old Tupperware pie stackers, purchased at the online auction or included in "box lots". They work well as long as your pie isn't too deep, and I like deep dish pies because I like the filling more than the crust. I got some pie boxes on Amazon, like this. Sometimes I have to use two square tupperware containers because they are shorter, and then still stack a third pie on top! The cake racks on glasses is a good idea, as long as you are careful how you shut the door of the fridge, so you don't jar your stack and have it fall. Yeah, ask me how I know THAT... Annie

Ink jet inks aren't very UV resistant. I guess the makers never counted on garden junker's creativity. The lamp in the sunny window probably has just enough of the UV filtered out by the glass to keep it's color. Thanks for the warning!
The transfer paper sounds like fun, I think I need to look into it. Ahhh, another project!

Oh I love this idea! And my hubby brought home a laser printer from work that they were getting rid of and we were debating on whether to keep. Now I know how to put it to good use. It only prints black though.

Kudzukween made photo plates by gluing her picture onto a plate & pouring acrylic over the picture. When it set up, she sealed with a spray varnish. At least, I think this is how she did it. I'm wondering if this process would withstand the outdoor elements?
I was at a TS this week & saw the perfect plates to use for house numbers, but since I was unsure of myself about doing this, I didn't buy them. Now I'm inspired & have to go back & hopefully they'll still be there!
I have a weakness for dishes, but you can only have so many in your house, right? So, the next best thing would be to have them outside too!
At the TS I found a shallow, aluminum pot that will make a good hat for my fish bowl snowman. Just in time to pack him away, boo hoo! Oh well, he'll be used next year. The pan might be a little too shallow but the effect will be there. I'll spray paint the pan black and glue it onto a small plate used for the brim of the top hat.

Vickie-Cool idea for snowman hat. I'm probably A.D.D. so I wouldn't even notice the post going another direction. Information is good no matter where it's posted.

I was thinking of using little picture frames to frame the seed packages but then I saw this waterslide decal stuff. I do not have a very steady hand for painting letters. Is there a UV protection varnish or acrylic or exterior modge podge???? And what if I just needed it to last one summer???
I'm gonna go look up Primrose Kathy's link and see what Christoph said.

Moonlight Kel- Check out the silk transfers that they make in this product for scarves. It has to be Lazer printed, no ink jets. What a great gift idea for beloved GM.

I bet they would last one garden season Susie. And there are uv resistant urethanes. I have some.
As for house numbers on plates, I plan to print the house number on my printer (right style and size, and use outline to save ink); cut them out with a craft knife, and stencil with ceramic paint. I have stenciled on rocks outside using this method using regular acrylic craft paint and it has lasted for years so far. I just use regular paper too. I have stenciled pet names on markers over their graves, and I have a "reproduction" postal marker from the Boston Post Rd.
