Newly made Spindle Stuff (pics)

Well I have been hard at it since I hit the "mother lode". Here are two of my birdhouses and a candle holder. The birdhouses are quite tall as they are on (3) spindles screwed/glued together. The candle holder I just had to put some glass on. *grin*

I love your super-tall spindle birdhouses!! How tall are they? I can see a bunch of those in the back of the garden, all along my fence! What kind of glue did you use? Did you put some kind of spike on the bottom, so you could stick them in the ground? I just love them, and you did a great job!!

I love the purple and green one! I agree they would look awesome along a fence or interspersed throughout the garden to add some height. Very pretty composition and colors!

I wish I knew how to use photoshop and I could help you, though I still struggle with my table top decor. Squirel has been helpful to me Ps'ing plants in my living room, which is probably why I have more there today than I would've otherwise. If would look very nice with a fern below in a wicker type pot in case the cat knocks it over. Would she play with the leaves? Here are a few pics of my entryway which you can see is also rectangular and a very awkward space to decorate. It's too big to leave complete empty, but I cannot put much there without it feeling cramped. My table location is not ideal as you see the side view more often than not. I may add a rug in front of the door (if I ever get around to choosing my LR/DR rugs) plus I may add a pic on the wall opposite the entry table. In this pic you can see what I mean about the mirror reflecting the wall decor so you get a double benefit: For the table decor items, you can find some interesting items at Home Decorators, Michaels, Kohl's, Linen's 'n Things, etc. and Lowe's or a nursery is a good place to find plants and a wicker type planter. Also you need to think about what you want to put on the walls before finalize the table decor so that one does not block another, unless it's a mirror as the mirror can reflect the item (like the backside of a lamp or flowers). Are you thinking of painting your entry? Perhaps the same color as your LR? It would look nice in some of the green shades you were considering for your LR or alternatively a tan/gold color that compliments it? How about your drapes?

I agree with Squirrelheaven to a degree. I don't think the woods have to match, but they do need to play nicely together (I can't think of how else to say it). Our wood floors are gunstock oak, but I like the contrast with the dark stair parts as well as the contrast between the floor and the dark maple cabinets. And your light cabinets seem like they would fight against the dark stair parts. BUT, I don't think you can discount the furnishings. When you walk into a furnished home you see it as a whole, not just the structure. So I do think you could get away with it since you have so many dark woods for the stairs to play off of. If you did stain your cabinets darker, the darker stair parts would tie in better, but I know that's a huge job and not something you might even want to think about (or even want to consider)! There was another thread about good decorating books, and a book by Lynette Jennings was recommended. I bought it and loved reading every page of it. One of the things she advises is to do what you love. It's YOUR house, so decorate it the way that makes YOU happy. You don't have to play by any rules. I would stand back and look at your railing with your eyes squinted and imagine it the way you want it and take in the rest of your house with it painted that way. Does that feel right to you? If so, I'd do it! Lynette had so many ways of saying the same thing. One was, "Decorating is fun when you take away the fear and the rules and develop confidence in your own decision-making ability." Another one was, "So stick to your instincts, don't be afraid of the result, and don't fall into measuring your natural selections against what appear to be the commandments of design." I am in exactly the same place with my red oak floors :( my floors look just as orange as in the pictures... and the variations and wood grain are much more pronounced than I wanted. I have the flooring company coming in on Monday to put down the third coat of poly - do I have any options at this point? Or just a matter of it mattering less once I get more used to the new color...? I had this same level of shock and discomfort with my wall color (had to leave my apartment for the evening just to soothe myself!), but once they sanded the floors - I realized I loved the wall color, just that my old floor finish was clashing with it. Now after staining the floor - I am back to feeling they really clash... and I really wish I had just opted for no stain and a natural finish instead... I’d take that look over what I now have any day. At least - that’s how it feels right now. To the original poster - @lacollar - (or anyone else with a similar experience) - did you eventually get used to (or even fall in love with?! :)) your floors... even though at first it felt like the choice of stain color was a huge mistake? Has anyone tried tinting the final coat to tone down the orange/reds? Does that work? Appreciate any help/advice. Thank you all!

Thanks for those comments, todd and HomeSealed. The window that is leaking used to be over to the left of its current spot (we moved it to go with the kitchen design). Maybe, that was why there was no building paper to the left. I know most of the house had building paper. The siding guy resecured the building paper (put on by the original framers) as he went. Sometimes, when we came home a new section was done, and we never saw what was under. I hope to hell most of the house ended up getting building paper. I found some older pictures of the windows secured by the original framing team. None of them had flashing tape either (I assume no sill treatment as well). At the time the windows were installed, we did not have proper window detail/flashing as part of our building code. Now it gets inspected by the inspector. We just missed out on that check and balance. You will see in the photos there are even gaps in the OSB, like the contractor hacked away with a dull saw. Can we use Great Stuff foam to fill in the voids of the OSB? Carol

Wow, what a motherlode....you did good!! Just love the look of those birdhouses and the candleholder. Is the candleholder gold colour just paint, or something more elaborate like gold-leaf? It looks so shiny and sumptuous.

Thanks for the kind words. countrygrl, the poles are about 72" tall which is (3) table legs screwed/glued with Gorilla glue. I wasn't going to put them in the ground, I thought about attaching them to my privacy fence way up in the air. Justlinda, the gold on the candle holder is craft acrylic gold. I put about 3 coats on it. And bright 199 about the yard poles... I just bought the place and there were these ugly galvanized poles in the front that I couldn't remove because they blocked where my septic is so people won't drive up on it. Well I got tired of looking at those ugly poles, so I went and bought some 3" PVC and caps, cut them at 4', painted them and slipped them over the poles. They look much better now. Course my neighbors probably think that new ole lady who moved in there is a little strange. *grin* But I don't care. At least my yard is filling in a little more this year. It's a slow process. I'm gonna make some more neat stuff this weekend. Wish I didn't have to work and could just stay home and make things, course I couldn't pay the bills that way. Dern!

Ohhh, I like the super tall birdhouses. I think it would be neat to have several of them in one area and see what kind of birds you get nesting in them. Thanks for sharing this idea.

I love what you did with the spindles. I still have some sitting here that I need to do something with. That gives me a few more ideas! And you sure did hit the mother load! WOW!!! Great pics.....

Donna, your spindle projects turned out really cute. Love the colors you've used, those will look great in the garden.

Have one more idea here for you. I got my Painting magazine today and they had a regular flower pot up on spindles! I read to see how they were put together and of course it was a kit you could order, but they said to put one ring under the pot and one inside it and then screw them into the post. Can't see why a couple big washers wouldn't do the same thing.

Will look forward to seeing what else you create with your spindles.

Pelican - sorry I didn't make these to sell, but thanks for the offer to buy. It would be impossible to ship them anyway cause they are 72" tall. The purple one is in my garden and the others are in my mom's and sister-in-laws. Thanks again though.
