Garden withdrawls

Anyone else bummed that the major players are pretty much done this season? Summer just flew by and I am a little sad :(. I think it is hard because our winters seem to drag on. But I am growing an indoor garden soon so that will keep me busy. Still have some canning to do too. How do you keep busy when the days are short? I am so addicted to gardening :)!

Get ready for the holidays, work on my compost and beds.
By the time the holidays are over it's about time to start seeds. I haven't done much from seed, but I retired in July, so I'm thinking that will be a great project!
I'm also hoping to start working on a greenhouse! I had a small HFGH for about 5 years, then it blew away! I loved sitting in there on cold days, reading Janet Evanovitch and cackling like a hen! I also loved having flowers in bloom in there all through the winter!
I also have a couple of winter beds that I have lettuce, chard, radish, beets, broccholi, fava beans, celery, kale, carrots. So I'm not out of the gardening loop. I just don't get very motivated to get out in the rain! LOL Nancy

Some breeders are trying to develop plants with horizontal or upright facing flowers, but that may prevent seed production, since the hanging flowers are designed to attract certain pollinators that are active during their flowering cycle. There is a hellebore grower here in the UK who is trying to produce plants with outward facing flowers. Although he is a high profile grower, he has no idea how hellebores work or why certain characteristics appear consistently. What he and others trying to stabilise the trait of outward facing flowers don't realise is that the pedicel and the length of the pedicel, which dictates whether or not the flower will face down, reacts to environment and probably can't be genetically stabilised. A plant bought with short pedicels, making the flower outward facing is likely to produce longer pedicels during a more mild winter or in lower than usual light conditions. I've seen it happen so many times when hellebores are completely different when moved to a new garden or even to a different spot in the same garden. The same grower wants to produce a hybrid which retains throughout the year the dark red/black foliage that some hybrids show on newly emerging foliage. Again, it's not going to happen. That dark colour is produced by anthocyanins as a reaction to cold temperatures and high UV levels associated with a high altitude environment. The chemicals in the foliage fade and conditions become more favourable as spring becomes summer. Rather than attract pollinators, the flowers hang down to protect the reproductive organs from inclement weather; keeping pollen dry for example. I've studied pollinators in the wild and although bees do act as pollinators when the weather is good enough for them to fly, the most common pollinator (apart from wind) I have seen is a small, hairy beetle. These beetles end up caked in pollen and polinate as they move all over the inside of the flower. As for plants produced by TC; I am uneasy about it. I'm not as bothered about it as I used to be, but that's got more to do with the fact that after eight years, I am no longer specialising in species (or any other) hellebores at my nursery. Too much time involved and not enough reward. Now that the nursery is a full time venture, that's not good enough.

great big huge hugs to susie and sunseeker thank you so much for the plumeria...have a few of sunseekers already in soil :)... the other things i have gotten that i am trying new are amaryllis and clivia and i got babies started on both. i am so so excited, now you tubing on how to plant my plumeria cuttings susie sent me...it is a good christmas for this gal, nothing makes me happier!!! my husband is lucky it takes such little things to make me happy...some dirt and flowers or veggies and im a happy gal lol. finished up some seed trades this afternoon and susie sending you some seed you requested as well and getting ready to start winter sowing...btw sweet autumn clematis is hardy in your zone and it went crazy from seed i winter sowed here and in my garden and beautiful now! so glad i found the winter sowing forum, it takes my winter blues away!!! and so grateful for the plumeria forum otherwise i would have never found about this georgous flower!!! thanks again ladies.

Veeja, Tisha is so cute, I just love her! I know she's in good hands with you since everyone has left their pets for you to care for, or "adopt" shall we say? My sister has the same heart for animals you do, and she always has four or five dogs at a time, some transitory and some permanent. I remember how she used to always walk up to dogs as a child when we were walking to school. Some so large and ferocious looking, I thought she'd be eaten by them, lol. Being four years her elder, my mother always entrusted my younger sister to my care. Anyway, to make a long story short, all the animals loved her and she would pet and talk to them. Now we have such fond memories of those "good times" we had in our childhood and I affectionately call her "Dr. DoLittle" everytime she takes in another stray. Have a wonderful day everyone. Sue N.

Well I actually have several of my hummer plants blooming right now...one lantana, 2 salvias one of my fuchsias, one and one flowering maple but the big surprise whas Calliandra which is like a miniature mimosa. I posted a picture of it on the main forum page. They are all inside of course but I am ready as soon as they return. No reports yet in NY but there is one official report in Hamilton Ont. There haave already been several reports as far north as Mich, and Wisc. So they should be here by the end of the month at least for some of us. They were moring north at a pretty good clip this year but then we got hit with the storm and lovw pressure which held them back but now we are getting high pressure and the breeze up from the gulf so they will be able to head north again. I have 3 feeders up so even if one comes by here on its way further north he will find some food. Penny

Oops, I had a typo lol at pnbrown. That is what I get for posting when I am tired. Can't fix it so will have to ignore it. I'd love a green house. I'd do the same thing. Beautiful flowers in winter. Now that's an idea! I wish I had a house with a yard for one. I think I am going to stock up on seeds :). If our springs weren't so cold, it wouldn't seem so long. I am ready to go in February but it is too darn cold.

Grow more Fall vegetables then. To me, the real end is Thanksgiving weekend. After that, it is only picking under hoop houses.

(spitting soda on keyboard after Pnbrown's comment) Well, I suppose someone had to say it!

No frost here yet; but when it comes, there will still be plenty to do. There are trays of tomatoes waiting to be dehydrated, and frozen juice (put up during the busy season) waiting to make jelly. I still have lots of garlic, shallots, and walking onions to Fall plant for next year. And since I grow many beans for seed, I'll also be shelling dry pods for at least a couple weeks after frost... which is a nice way to ease the withdrawl, y'all. ;-)

No problems here.
I have few winter crops(Onions, radishes, leeks, parsley).
So when the maters and pepps and eggps and cukes are gone, I will prepare the beds, turn over add compost and cover(too much rain on the way in the winter). That will be like a month from now.

I will just relax more, eat more and enjoy the holidays ...
Next get seeds and get ready, maybe, germinated few pepps and maters (head start program).

Zone 6 A here. Besides the sweet potatoes that I'll dig this week, a short row of late beans, late zucchini and the last of the peppers, still in the garden--fall beets, carrots, Asian radishes, scallions, leeks, kale, collards, cabbages, several types of fall/winter lettuces, arugula, mustards, turnips, chard, and savoy cabbages that will be harvested in December and January. I always like the fall garden the best.

A lot of processing to do around this time. I just finally had time to put up some of the fruit I had frozen during the hot season.

Come November, trees need to be pruned.

Well, y'all, I'm not sad a-tall:

Apples are everywhere, cider is hardening in the kitchen, peppers and tomatoes are overflowing, the sun chokes are flowering, corn is getting close to bread-stage, more green beans than can be eaten....

It's a great season this year, just too many things to be done right now is the only problem.

I'm sad that the beans, cukes and tomatoes are done as well as the second crop of peas, but the greens are in their prime. There is so much labor now, taking down vines and trellises, making compost with the grass and newly falling leaves, emptying containers of deck plants as they die in the cold.

I garden till the snow and ice keep me from opening the fence gate. I also dream of an attached garden room in my house.How much fun that would be. I get away to a warmer place for a few weeks in winter and then start seeds indoors by March. I bide my time with swing dancing, hiking and otherhobbies indoors.

Also, this time of year we have fun picking apples at abandoned or public orchards and my friends' backyards. I make fruit nectars with my juicer. I love autumn, my favorite season
