overgrown weeds

This summer because of house renovations i let my garden go to pretty well all weeds and they have tons of seeds on them .

What i am afraid is that by removing them by hand i will scatter the seeds all over my garden and next summer i will have tons of weeds again.

I have a weed burner thingy but have never used it. What would you guys do with a weed mess .

I would expect to be weeding a lot for several years and try not to let it get out of hand again!

Pick as much seeds as you can, then pull the weeds, pile them up and burn them when dried. you can do this right on the patch or somewhere else.
This is probably too little too late but its better than doing nothing.

To the OP - I feel for you! My great-uncle died last Aug, and his DD wants my help managing her blueberry patch (he used to do PYO), it's only about 1/10 acre and 1 year and it's overgrown, I can't imagine your fields! A lot of ground to cover, but I think the only thing you can do is mow (I don't know, tilling might spread it more) and mulch thickly - even cover with plastic. How much space between rows? All you have to do is mow it low enough to keep it knocked down, mulch to keep it from getting sun (plastic or cardboard if you can find enough and make sure to overlap the edges would be goo, to keep it from getting rain too). I have a problem with ragweed here, clear plastic seems to work better to solarize it and once the leaves are dead I can pull up the roots. Smothering it with thick wood chips didn't help - tried that in 2012 during drought and the ragweed thrived b/c it kept moisture in! Once you think you've killed the foliage, you can remove the plastic/cardboard and start pulling up the roots - wear gloves! Then I'd put the plastic (try pro-quality landscape fabric) back on, you can mulch then with woodchips so people have something to walk on, hopefully the fabric will keep the PI down. If you skip the fabric it WILL come right back up through the woodchips and you'll have to keep pulling it. If that's too much to handle on 1/2 acre, then constant mowing (and pulling vines if/when they start to climb the bushes) is the only thing to do. At least you don't expect anyone to be out there barefoot, right?

A better reason to not rototill is that you will never be able to level the yard. You can level the surface but the subsurface will be uneven. Then when the fluffy soil on top settles over the next 3 YEARS, it will settle down to the contour of the uneven subsurface. No matter how hard your soil may seem it is NOT compacted. Those plants you have now cannot grow in compacted soil. You have a lot of shade so your grass choices are limited. One very popular shade grass is fescue. The others are two varieties of zoysia that will grow in shade. I believe one is Diamond (in your neighborhood) and the other is Shadow Turf (out of Texas).

You have two issues: 1 - Getting rid of the poison ivy 2 - preventing weed regrowth Even dead poison ivy causes a rash ... so spot it, spray it thoroughly with glyphosate (the generic ingredient of Roundup, available as "eliminate" at Walmart) or a brush killer STRICTLY following instructions. When it has died back, put on protective gear (painter's suit and impervous gloves) and remove the dead stuff, placing it DIRECTLY into trash bags and sealing them up. Monitor the spot for the next couple of years, spot-spraying and disposing of any survivors the same way. NOTE: Poison Ivy spreads by seeds in bird poop, so you will have to stay aware and kill it as soon as you see it. It will be back! ========= A thick layer of mulch will minimize weed regrowth.

I don't know how to use a weed burner thingy, but in my area you DON'T want to at this time of year!
You might cover the area with plastic to kill everything or you can use the round-up that also has the pre-emergent or just a pre-emergent by itself.
I know, I know, don't want to use the chemicals, but sometimes that's all you can do!

Go through the garden with a clippers and a garbage can. Gently cut off the seed heads or pull out by the roots and place them in the can.

I use large quantities of weeds to make hot compost. Most of the viable seed heads get "burned". I don't sweat pulling an occasional subsequent weed.
You could shallow till the area and plant a smother crop. Around here, buckwheat serves well. Three rotations at around four weeks each will eliminate existing plants, unless there is lack of germinating moisture... the cover crop needs to "jump up" and choke competitors.
All the green manure improves your soil.

I used Preen for the first time this year and I followed the directions and it worked really well. I didnt need to weed at all until August--then it seemed the weeds came out of nowhere and took over parts of the garden yet other beds are still weed-free today. In the places where the weeds grew back, maybe the Preen wore off.

I hope I get the same effect next year--not having to weed during the summer was really a treat for me.
