pruning grape vines

This is the 3rd year I've had a grape vine growing in my back yard. It just sort of grew there by some over- generous and well meaning family friend who wanted me to have it. I never really cared for it till this year, when I first saw some fruit buds growing about the size of small peppercorns right now. I am all excited, but clueless.

I've never really pruned it at all. My question is: Should I prune off the young branches and shoots that don't have any fruit on it so the plant gives more energy to the fruit bearing branches? I see alot of vigourous growth happening, but no fruit bearing branches on them.

I'm thinking of pruning like how you prune for tomato plants, but since I've never really paid attention to this grape vine before, I don't want to kill it by trial and error.

I've read some posts and googled how to prune but most say to only prune in late winter and early spring, but nothing about pruning excessive non-fruit bearing shoots and branches in the summer, growing months.
