Backyard Living- Satellite Gazebo featured!

Did you see the article about the gal who built the satellite dish gazebo?

I love seeing stuff like this because it's like "a new idea" to the magazine people. If they hung out here more often, they'd see that it's commonplace amongst 'those in the know.' Those magazine people need to get out of the cubicles more often.

I didn't see the artical but have seen them done on this forum(-: I have one to do still. I just haven't got anyone to help me yet.

I haven't seen it either but I often think, when I see stuff in the magazines, they must have a staff person who's job it is to search this group!!

How's the headboard fence holding up? Now that should be in a magazine!!!

Hope all is well with you and yours...how are the winds up on that hill!!

Sorry about the confusion. The "+" sign is a symbol representing the center of a plant. The circle represents its perimeter. In this case, it represents a small tree. The "." symbol is the same thing. In this case it represents a shrub form. The shapes in between the patio and house are generic plants ... there only to give the plan a vague sense that plants in that space are possible. When looking down from above (as in a PLAN) all individual plants are going to look like a circle with a center. The scalloped edge thing is a plant MASS .... where smaller plants are amassed together such that you do not see the individual, but only the perimeter of the group. Here, it's all generic and doesn't yet matter about the plants. I'm only showing them to say that "some plants can fit in this space." At this point, all you need to care about is the patio. The hardscape (patio) comes first. The plantings are subordinate and will comply with whatever way the patio ends up being. Since you don't want a deck, whatever steps you have will come fairly near the door. You'll still need a landing at the door (rather than immediately stepping down as that would be cheap looking and feeling, such as what one would expect to see in a mobile home situation) which is why I suggest make it and steps full width of the wall face. It will work and look much better than if you try to make it only one door width, as it is now. You only need 4 risers for the set of steps. You want a small patio. There is no need or reason to make a contrived or convoluted set of steps with this small, simple need. Keep them spacious and simple and you will have a nice finished package. Get cute or clever and you might like it for a while, but others will wonder why you bothered or the next owner may dislike it. Simple, well functioning steps will work best. You can glamourize them in the construction details, if that suits your taste. If you want something other than straightforward, it would be best if you sketch it out in plan view, and then I'd be happy to react to what you've proposed, giving the pros and cons. I think I mentioned before but did not see your answer .... you'll need to figure out the total square footage that you want for patio space. It doesn't need to be to the square inch. You just need to get into the ballpark on it. While I'm not working to scale -- just proportion -- I estimate the patio in the sketch to be about 170 s.f., which does not count the pure walking space in front of the steps. Including that, it might be around 200 s.f. Keep in mind that in order to do the same functions (cook and eat) requires a little more room outdoors than it does indoors. Outdoors, people move about faster and flail their arms more :-).

Lots of possibilities for a cozy space. Here are some ideas - 1) Power wash the retaining wall and use it as the backdrop for your focal point. 2) Plant a row of evergreen shrubs along the top fence, and plant a row of lower perennials & annuals in front of the shrubs to cascade over the wall for visual interest/seasonal color. Keep it neat with plenty of bark mulch. Perhaps add evergreens along the side fence. 3) Regrade the yard so it's level and grass over where the bricks were, and everywhere else. Looks like you have enough hard-space. 4) Plant a sturdy ground cover under the trees if grass cannot grow there - vinca, pachysandra. Perhaps build a planter ring around the trees with the bricks and plant shade annuals. 5) Add your water feature as the focal point centered at the base of the wall (small waterfall, fountain, or semi-circular koy pond). Maybe use the bricks to build this. 6) Gazebo could overpower this yard - instead maybe consider an airy pergola that extends out a few feet from your doorway and plant with flowering vines. Alfred, I have not read through all of your thread, but from my perspective, it seems like the tile is ok. Have you looked into having it professionally cleaned? A “green” type of cleaning maybe, if possible - I’m sure something like this should be available in CA. Then just do the pavers and maybe some edge plantings in unpaved area, and put up a gazebo. You could start with, or just permanently use, a portable gazebo - as I show in pic in my first comment. I would really not get jackhammers, etc. and try to do this yourself. If you want to make a major change in the future, I would recommend just saving up and hiring professionals. You will save yourself the wear and tear and probably get better results that way. I really think you can work with your tile as it is. If you want to change/vary the look, in some areas you could place some outdoor rugs.

I wonder if you can install the turf right over the pavers? That was my first thought too. You also could get large planters and add small trees, tall bamboo, succulents and shrubs, etc. Small above ground pool or recirculating fountain? Depends on your budget, I guess. Cushy upholstered furniture looks inviting....Umbrellas or look at temporary pergolas/shade structures. I've seen some nice ones using large pots or bucket filled with concrete to hold upright poles to attach shade cloth and/or string lights over an area. This is a little elaborate, but depending on your budget, you could construct a wood platform and create a shade structure on that. this could be more attractive, but just showing buckets of concrete and pvc shade structure fast growing bamboo, but put it in large pots: succulents are easy care, low water option for plants large metal planters, but I'd worry about them heating up too much unless shaded

Satellite dishes should be more plentiful, now that the small dishes are in fashion. We finally got our big ol' dish taken down and I'm waiting for DH to get around to it. I've saved photos of the neatest ones I saw, and we have a difference of opinion as to how it should look and how many posts should support it -- he thinks between 1 and 4, and I'm holding out for 5 or 6.

The Harbor Freight Greenhouse has taken most of his project time lately. There are pastures to burn and more tree limbs to trim and then he needs to finish the 'new' generator setup before Hurricane Season starts again.

Just found this thread looking for one that I had found the other night when I was searching for something. Wanted to show you all my satelite dish gazebo since I am almost done with it. Still got a few more things I want to do to it but it's getting closer to being finished FINALLY! I started this poor thing back in 04. lol

I have a pic of one of my all time favorite satellite gazebos....posted by a dear lady using the tag "Treasure ?" she hasn't been here for some time now and I miss her ideas so much....since I don't own the pic...I can't post it here, but trust me ...it is awesome! Do any of you other old timers remember Treasure?

I have a mesh dish sitting in the back yard. Bill and I took it down in '04 after I saw it listed in the free section in the paper. Don't know how I will ever get it put up now.
Just about everybody has their own hurricane related problems that haven't been solved yet, as well as their regular 'life'.

I've seen several on this forum that are just beautiful. DH couldn't believe they were sat. dishes,and he has his heart set on making one,but we just haven't found one in decent shape yet. He thinks he'll use 4 or 5 posts for it when he does get one. I'd love to have one as an extension of my front porch,like you see some gazebos,but he wants it out further in the front yard.

I've always thought that if I ever found one of the big ones to use for a gazebo top...I would like to buy the nylon material that they make jackets out of...(Hancock Fabrics sell it) I would want bright colors, or maybe just dark blue to match my blue bottles and sew sections together like a huge umbrella and stretch it over the top, hand stitching it around the bottom.
Some of those tiny (1/2 inch) mirrors glued on the fish line hanging down like water might be cute....

But it would also make it stay dry underneath on a rainy day...as long as the wind wasn't blowing.
