What do I still have time to sow in 5b?

My cukes are nearly dead tat this point. Is it too late to sow something like chard in that spot? Anything else?

I also have a large patch where I sowed carrots three or four weeks ago, but only see a few growing. Something's been eating my seedlings I think, because I saw them spouting and then they slowly started to vanish. Same thing happened to the snap peas I planted. I saw vines starting and then poof, gone. Looking to fill that spot as well.

I'm in 5b as well, and this week I'll be planting spinach, winter lettuces, mustard, tat soi (sp?), arugula, mizuna, mache. Most of it will live all winter with a little bit of cover. Too late for chard or kale for my area (won't get big enough).

I'll plant garlic in late October.

Owari Satsuma will be sold as a dwarf if it is grafted onto a dwarfing rootstock. It's pretty easy to find in the Sacramento area--a lot of citrus trees sold throughout northern California seem to be from just a few growers, so the chances are good that your nursery in question will have one; it's a pretty common tree. Or they can order it for you. It grows slow and has a lovely droopy habit. Fruit can be not so sweet in the first few years, give it a bit of time. There are other types of Satsumas but I never see them for sale. catkim, I like Pixie mandarins, they are my favorite--and they are recommended for coastal climates. In my area--ss 17--Clementine (Algerian) in addition to Satsuma are really tasty, very sweet, and I also like Fremont mandarin (I think it is a Clementine/Ponkan hybrid.) Yours would prolly be even better than mine since you're a bit warmer in SD. HTH.

Hair, the winters here are bad enough. New England is much worse. But you gotta do what you gotta do. I did see a large, beautiful baldcypress at Niagara Falls (Ontario), and the nearby northern red oaks & sugar maples were impressive. Regarding hemlocks & woolly adelgids, the little suckers swept thru here a decade ago, but seem to have disappeared mostly. I was hiking at the drainage of nearby Rocky Gap Park lake where there are some stands of mature hemlocks (100' plus). Some dead skeletons showed, but the majority of them seemed mostly recovered. Nothing like the complete devastation in Md's Catocton park.

How do I protect my Needle Palm(R. Hystrix) in zone 5b

Its a very nice needle palm! I think its a great size for $2 dollars so although it may be a little small, it was worth the price. I havent had luck with asking home depot to ship certain plants. I actually went to a home depot away from my location and asked if they could ship a plant to my location, but they said they couldnt and all of their plant shipments are random for the most part. -Alex

I don't think you have a lawn problem at all. Basically crappy genetic stock bowing out to the conditions. It'll likely come back fine this fall. How you manage the fall season is largely dependent on what is the predominant grass type in your blend. If just a cool season mix, treat it as such and take an average. So between high input KBG to as low as fine fescue, fertilize somewhere in between. You have to cater your routine to what you have. Sounds like you are wanting more. That requires better genetic stock or going over the top with what you have in defiance of nature--that will require more pesticide use and cultural practices like core aeration.

No. I'm in your area, and twice now the heat has wiped out late spinach and lettuce seedings.

Wait til Thursday at the earliest.

I'm not really sure I'm going to bother to try again.

I'm wondering if I might be better off checking at a nursery for some chard and lettuce rather than starting from seed.

CaraRose, in my experience nobody but gardening nuts like here on GW even thinks about planting crops in September, and so I can never find anything to plant at a nursery. I've had really good luck with planting seed in mid September, and then covering the new seedlings in October. Still, I wish you luck finding bedding plants!

Last year I found mixed lettuce (last six pack). Not sure if I'll luck out again there. Chard was easy to find because they sell fully mature plants as well as seedlings as ornamental here. My local nursery has bright lights chard everywhere.
