It was supposed to be 47F today, but instead, has been 34F-37F with steady snow.

To pick the green tomatoes, or try to cover them... That is the question!

Its just so hard for me to relate since temps are still running 105-109 deg F here.

If it does not usually get cold were you are this early I think I would try covering them. Winters seam to be getting earlier and colder though so there is no real right answer. Its just a judgment call.

We live in northern ontario. We haven't had frost or snow yet but the temps dipped pretty low a couple of nights. We always pick our tomatoes green, especially the big ones. If we get frost at least we don't lose them all. They never lose their taste and ripen just fine in our cool basement. We keep them in 6 quart baskets about half full. I check them almost every day--there is the odd one that will rot--and I move them into ripe turning and green baskets.

The ripe ones either get eaten or canned. I'm almost finished doing them. I have 30 pints and 7 quarts of canned tomatoes and 7 pints of tomato juice. Another recipe of juice and one more canner full of the canned ones and I'm done. We'll eat the rest or give them away.

I placed my order for the leaves on Monday and they just arrived here today on Wednesday. They sent two of each. I was tickled to see that. The leaves were nice and firm but I trimmed the ends a little and have them all sitting in little Solo cups of RO filtered water with the labels I made for each leaf. I already have plenty of space under fluorescent lights for them as I make leaves into small plants into big monster plants but I am already planning on adding more shelves and lights just for the AV's. I baby my hostas constantly. I water about every other day unless we get a good long rain. I buy many tissue culture hostas so those always get babied. The AV's will fit right in because I am like a mother goose over the babies. I tend them constantly, never go on vacations or anywhere else that keeps me from taking care of my plants and house full of pets. Five dogs, two cats, two parrots and a snake. I feel like a kid on Christmas morning. Apache Brave. This one actually has pink variegation. I had never seen any variegation on an AV before. I can hardly wait until I have huge plants! Home Fires. White variegation. Lacy Lass. I love the scalloped edges. I am a big fan of fancy foliage. The date stamp on the pictures is wrong. I just bought a new camera over the weekend and I was off by a day when I set it. My bad. This is my new plant growing area in the basement. I will build something similar down there for growing out a bunch of AV's but without the pond liner. I will propagate and grow the baby AV's upstairs on my big seedling cart and under the other shoplights I have set up upstairs. I get the feeling that I know where all of this is going to end up. Once I get everything down pat I will probably end up showing. I just think these AV's are gorgeous and they should be shared. I also love giving things away to brighten someones day so these will fit right in. The recipients will also receive proper education into the care of their gifts with me as a source of information and rescue of the plants as needed. This is a picture of the kind of seedling cart I have upstairs. The pictures I take of mine don't look right since I have so many other plant lights lit up in the room.

On the dogwoods, it really depends on how far south in Zone 9 you are. Felix, you are in Zone 9a I believe, and I am in Zone 9b. You can grow things I can't, including dogwood. It will SURVIVE here, barely. It normally doesn't thrive here, though. I have on rare occasion seen one doing fairly well, if in enough shade from taller trees, but nothing like dogwoods SHOULD look like. So, Kim, on the dogwood thing...if you are in the southern part of Zone 9, I'd say stay away from them. If they are already planted in your yard and you are moving them (not sure what you meant by "transplanting" them), I'd say leave them alone if they are doing okay. Moving them might finish them off. Most of the other things you mention in your list will probably be fine, except I've had no luck at all with love in a mist. It grows for awhile, but seldom blooms for me, and as soon as it gets hot, it dies. Maybe if you grow it as a winter annual. Good luck! Goodness! The wine opener! I'm packing my (whole) two drawers tonight. Everything else is packed up and ready to go. I'm pulling that out now. We tear out Saturday morning. You must be very excited! When do the new countertops come? I'll have not only no heat, but no outer wall on the northwest end of the house and I live near you! Figures it's the coldest weekend of the year! Stay warm!!

Hi Beachem, I can't comment on any Dynasty problems. As always, people tend to express themselves more when there is a problem vs. when they are satisfied. We did not have any issues with the cabinets as delivered. I did see that recent post about Crystal and the absolute mess with issues that were clearly not related to shipping. My cabs arrived on time and in the correct custom color, style, and form. No issues so far. I have noticed a few (very) small dings/chips so far, but those likely occurred during installation and the beehive of activity that has been our kitchen project. The designer/contractor told me they wait until the very end of the project before assessing what (if anything) needs to be reordered, and place one final request. This is assuming it cannot be fixed in place to be 100% perfect. Just like with cars, Omega or Crystal's client really is the dealer and not you. I am not involved in ordering the cabinets, paying for them, handling a replacement, etc...I have the dealer for all those things. So I think that making sure that the dealer is proactive and 100% focused on your satisfaction is just as important as choosing the cabinet maker.

That is accumulated snow on the squash leaves, not frost. Dime-sized snow flakes fell pretty briskly for about 4 hours. I'll try to post a video clip.

I'm a couple hours south of the Canadian border at Saskatchewan.

I see the pictures were taken after 2PM now and yes it looks more like snow. Still yet if you spray it off before getting good sun exposure (whenever that may be) the damage wont be as severe. Of course if temps are below freezing that wont help much.

People right near us got four inches of hail on Monday ... even though temps weren't nearly as cold as up near you.

Taz--- you don't get damage from snow, you only get it from frost. It can snow and still not have temps low enough to freeze. In fact if you have snow on the plants and it freezes the plants will be protected. There is air trapped between those little flakes of snow

Not if it melts some then freezes which happens quite often.
