To mulch or Not to mulch my strawberries...?

half-full

Hello, I have a few everbearing strawberries which are still sitting in their 1 gallon containers from the nursery. I'm preparing to plant this pretty soon into a wooden bed that I put together which is about 12 inches deep. Hope the depth of this will be sufficient.

In any event, my question is this, I was interested in putting in some mulch to keep the soil off the strawberries which may also help ward off any fungal issues and keep them cleaner. I'm thinking of going with the straw. I know pine needles is also suggested but this seemed perhaps a bit too prickly.

I read that the oat, wheat or soybean straw were the best choices to use here. I also read that some straws have seeds which would not do me any good. Would like to find some seedless straw mulch online that would be ideal for my purpose.. Anybody know any good recommended product that can be purchased online?

I can't seem to find this stuff in my area... Any thoughts or suggestions would be great. Thanks again..

Richard S.
