My beautiful garden

that you all have seen so neat and tidy, never anything out of place...no grass or anything to worry about...is now a disaster...but you know what...It is horrible to look at...I mean there are weeds waist tall...but there are so many things that are producing like crazy that it is mind boggling..The tomatoes that I planted this spring are loaded down and still producing tomatoes...they are usually gone by August...my fall tomatoes are heavy with ripe tomatoes..theres tons of peppers, the best I've ever grown and lettuce...yes lettuce...and weeds everywhere.

The sad part of this tale is that it is weedy not because I don't care but because I found out a llittle more than two months ago that I have lung cancer....so instead of gardening which I love so much, and which you all have seen pictures of so many times is a mess... I've been busy having 2/3 of my right lung removed and tomorrow is my first visit with the Oncologist....so it's been a busy summer for me...It just didn't include any weeding. My sweet husband who knows nothing about gardening has been turning on my soaker hoses and harvesting veggies for me. It breaks my heart to see all the weeds but I am going to have some help soon cleaning up some of the mess out there...

I hope that by next spring I will be able to do some gardening...Oh and some how or other...I'm going to get out there and plant some onions and garlic between one of my chemo rounds...Cross your fingers for me...

PS...I was just thinking...maybe I can plant some turnips too...some collards....well not this year but hopefully next year...Again cross your fingers on that one.

I'm pretty new here, so I haven't seen your pictures and don't know your gardening story. But I'm amazed, full of admiration for you and what you're going through now, and for your strength . I'm keeping my fingers crossed for your garlic, your turnips, your collards and for you. Please know you're an inspiration, and that this stranger out here is rooting for YOU!.

Some more awesome ideas, thanks. I love the cut rose idea, I am a member at Costco too! I was thinking about cutting things way back, like Henry suggested to get things looking healthier and greener. Will perennials that are already done blooming grow new green growth if I prune them back? I keep having visions of my beds in late summer, after I have sort of neglected them during August, they're not party ready that's for sure! If I keep everything fertilized and watered, can I avoid past blooming perennials from looking scraggly and yellowed out? We've had 40 days and 40 nights of rain here this Spring/Summer, so everything is so lush and green so far. About the RRD in PA - unfortunately I had my first confirmed case (by Ann actually), in 2003. At that time she told me I was the first she heard of so far East. I am in Bucks county. Sadly my property is surrounded by wild Multiflora that is badly infected, so every year I dig out several of my own roses that have been infected. Those 3 letters give me the shivers!

Saypoint, Locating plants for plant culture considerations, rather than design ones, might help make it look more natural and less "planned". Would you still plant using groups or colonies of the same species plant or would that seem too contrived? Also, including some of the same plants that you are already using in adjacent areas will add unity and avoid the possibility of making the berm so different from the rest, that it stands out even more. Of course that makes perfect sense which is of course why my first inclination was not to repeat using any of the surrounding plantings! Would you randomly stagger plant heights? Thanks jant, I don't think I have ever grown Aruncus but I do like it's "woodsy" feel is it well behaved?

A picture would be helpful. If it is a millet, I doubt that Preen will prevent it from germinating and growing, and as Kimmsr says, anything already emerged will not be touched. Grass killers such as Grass-B-Gone will take care of emerged plants as long as what you are protecting isn't also susceptible to it, and beans are one of the plants it shouldn't hurt. Your best long term solution is to prevent seed production. Even if you don't get them all pulled, don't allow any of them to go to seed--pull the seed heads out as soon as they show up. Vinegar is also a non-selective chemical (beware getting it on any of your desired plants, and it can affect the roots also), but is so common it seems comfortable whereas the pesticides aren't so familiar. In a garden, it is often impractical to use herbicides as you have a large variety of vegetables and very few pesticide choices that won't hurt at least some of them. Tillage (hoeing, cultivating) when they first come up is usually the most effective, as are mulches.

Ruthie, I wish we were neighbors...those weeds would not stand a chance. I take direction real well and all you'd need was a chair in the shade and a bullhorn! :))

You'll be in my prayers and thoughts...good thoughts of not only tolerating the chemo well, but SAILING through it.

BTW, I think the onions and garlic may be lonely without a few greens to go with them ;)

Sorry to hear your sickness. But you are strong, you are beautiful, you will be back to your garden! I enjoyed your garden pictures especially those raised bed ones. Wishing you well.
