Electroculture: What Happened to It?

Has anyone here heard of electroculture? According to one of my old organic gardening books it was popular in the 'seventies.
Gardeners commented on the way their gardens flourished, particularly after thunderstorms dumped a lot of electricity into the air. I gather this was channeled to the roots by system of collector rods in the soil but I haven't been able to find any more useful references to the practice. Even google has failed me.
