Sweet potato vine - what will it do?!
Comments (13)I just stumbled on this thread while googling around for info on the sweet potato vine. I think I'm gonna try this: " Inside, they were once common houseplants grown on kitchen windowsills, the beautiful vines trained up and around window frames. To help your kids grow their own vine, choose a firm sweet potato. Some are treated with heat to keep them from sprouting on grocery-store shelves, but most grow roots in a matter of days after being placed in water. Using four toothpicks, have your child suspend the vegetable on the rim of a jar or mug filled with water. Make sure the bottom half - the pointed end - is under water. Place in a sunny spot, and change or add water as needed. In a few days, roots will form below the water. And, two to three weeks later, leaves and stems will sprout from the top. Continue to grow the plant in water or, after a month or two, pot the sweet potato in a houseplant potting mix. Keep the soil moist. The stems are weak, so help your child tie them to strings, wire or a stake. Feed once a month with a balanced water-soluble fertilizer such as 20-20-20. As the vine grows, cut it back a few inches to force the plant to grow bushy." Comments (5)ornamental i believe i got them at walmart on clearance for the outside and have moved some inside still got quite a few outside and they are dying off i wonder if they will come back next year. anyway i have not really noticed any spider mites but i sprayed my plants before i brought them inside. i am just kind of adjusting all my plants around if they are one place and seem to be happy there i just leave them if not i move things around until the plant is happy and healthy. the green leaf sweet potato vine is happy as a little lark. i may have to run it around the room two or three times before spring the way things are looking but the purple leaf ones just dont seem so happy in the house. i will keep trying though...the funny thing is is there is new leaves coming on all the time but alot of leaves turn a autumn red color and just die, maybe this is a normal process for this vine i dont know....See Moresweet potato vine
Comments (41)I have enjoyed all the postings re this remarkable and dazzling plant - but no one has touched on the issue of pests. I am inundated with "holes" on my spv leaves......need to know of a successful treatment for this problem.....Also - I have been very successful "rooting" spv - directly - into small pots of a good potting soil..keep moist...From now on - I will no longer buy a dozen pots for my window boxes....a few to root will do!...See MoreQuestion about sweet potato vines...
Comments (4)I think they are happiest with as much light as you can give them in the winter. I usually try to overwinter the tubers, sometimes it works, sometimes not. You can just set a pot of potting soil in the way and let the vines drape over it, they will often root along as they go. You can also drape the vines across the top of the soil in a pot and then place a heavy rock on top of them - forcing them down onto the soil, they will usually root where their joints touch soil. Once winter weather is in the forecast just snip the vines and haul the pot indoors. They make pretty houseplants but they need a lot of light....See MoreTiffany, purpleinopp Z8b Opp, AL
