Garden Shed w barn board siding

Not totally sure this belongs here as its not all old stuff. But a good share of it is.

This shed was built mainly by myself and my 74 y/o dad with some plans I purchased online. My DH also helped some here and there and was a big help at the end with finishing building the trusses and then we could not have gotten the trusses/sheeting up without his help. Only thing we didn't do ourselves is the shingles and that was because we simply ran out of time and needed it done quick before a snowfall came later that week. So hired a guy to shingle it. We started about the 1st of Oct and it was late Nov. or early Dec. the day DH & I put the last battens (little boards between the barn boards) on.

Although it has got new lumber for framing, etc. the siding, windows and door are all salvaged. The siding came from 3 different old farm buildings. The windows also came from one of those buildings and door was $10 from C.L.

This spring I'll add a little porch and a couple of old porch posts my dad already had. And of course flower beds all around it. :)

Can't wait to play with it this spring. Already have it about filled up. :-/

threekittens - I really like your shed. Doesn't it give you a sense of accomplishment to have done it yourselves? The recycled siding and windows look neat. Can't wait to see what you do in the spring. Thank you for sharing. - Marylee

To paint the door the color of the shaded side of the shed is what I want. On the Benjamin Moore color strip that the main body and lighter trim color are on, there's only one color darker. I'll probably start with that, although I suspect it won't be dark enough. Re your barn - Maybe a nice dark charcoal gray for the main volume of it, a black door, and a shade lighter than charcoal for trim would 'tart it up' without giving it center stage. Black is always good to minimize things. I think light-medium-dark for the color selection works very nicely. Are you in New England somewhere? I'm originally from the east coast of Canada. I'm not sure about New England but, while the lighter gray weathered cedar shingle or barn-board is (was? - I haven't been 'home' in a long while...) common, an almost black stain was sometimes used instead of paint. I liked the look of that. On houses, it was usually combined with white trim, but white trim on the 'barn' would draw too much attention to it I think. The CAD class is going fine - but it's a LOT of work! It's funny, when I took the LD1 class in winter '09, I kept saying 'it must be faster to do this with CAD'. Now that I'm taking the CAD course, I keep saying 'I could do this faster by hand'. :-) I think it's gardengal who has said several times that she does a lot of her stuff by hand. I sure understand that better now! The software is pretty quirky (e.g.figures rotate couter-clockwise; lines rotate clockwise ?!) and drives me nuts at times. Do you use the software now?

Fame: All good imput from various points of view. I agree if it is going to be a long term investment (only Structure) ensure adequate sizing for a small lawn tractor and some tolls chainsaw , lawnmower etc. 12'x12' would be minimum. I like exmar's recommendation also for a do it yourself project that even you with your wife could do for quite a $ savings for your lawn tractor and a few tools . Sorry I can't help you with craigslist info . If you are going local word of mouth usually gets you a reliable Handy Man for a from scratch Baby Barn Installation . All the Best Bro :)

andrelaplume, I hope you can get some pictures posted of your shed and the lay of the land. Your "light bulb" about a side door isn't too far fetched and not too late either. I heard that the statute limiting sheds to doors on one side only was repealed. If you have adequate wall height on the sides for driving the tractor in without giving yourself a free hair cut (or lobotomy) a doorway for the tractor might be reasonable. If you decided to add a door on the side, you could design the "doors" as "2 half doors with a vertical overlap where the 2 halves meet in the middle (to hide the center seam), hinge the doors at the bottom so that when the "doors" are let down they become a short entry ramp. The "doors" could be equipped with latches/hasps/bolts that are entirely on the inside of the shed and it wouldn't even be obvious that there was an opening from outside the shed. Attach a short length of light duty rope to the upper inside surface of each "door" so you can pull the "doors" closed or let them down from inside the shed. This trick would allow you to keep your current ramp (if you wish) for all the other traffic, and would keep from having 2 readily visible ramps in place. (Just another idea that started ricocheting around inside my skull) Of course, this idea would be easiest to accomplish IF your shed is covered with the popular "T-111" 4' X 8' wood panels. Vinyl siding would be more problematic to accomplish a "hidden" door, but there are still ways that could be handled.

Evenie, I wish that was my house! Hoovbs too. I would love to put a glass door on it like Muscovy's photo, but the foot print is so tiny (37x69) to the outer walls, I need every square inch for storage. I plan to put in hooks for one of the plastic wheel barrows, it would be all you would see through the glass anyway. I want to be able to hang gloves, paper towers, plastic rack, loppers, clippers etc all on the door so it has to be sound. Unfortunately, the barn wood is not sound and I don't think that OSB will stand up to the use either. It gets super dusty down there so a nice tight seal would be wonderful. I think I will have to use plywood with the barnwood glued to the front. But I will also have to trim to work with hinges and that is where I am at a stand still design wise. I am trying to do it cheap or that would not be as big of a deal. I could use fence pickets and paint them so it does not look so odd with the old and the new. It will tell me what I want. I feel a tad (only a tad) guilty about having two garden sheds. But we have a big garden and one is at the top of the hill and the new is at the bottom. It will help to have less of a walk.

Thanks. Actually, looking at these pics, I don't think the battens were on yet when these were taken. I'll post some pics this summer when I have the porch on and hopefully some flowers around it.

Love it, threekittens! DH & I make bdhouses & feeders out of old barnwood...lasts forever, doesn't it! I love what you & your Dad have built & your DH pitching in when he could, too! Looks like it will be a nice little retreat to go into & pot away or put a rocker in & some seed books & dream about spring!!Should at least have a chair even if it is getting full. Is the wall without any windows for hanging up tools? I like the windows you have used. Should be nice & light & give seedlings a good start.Might consider shelves that can drop down when you need more room. Nice work DD, DH & You,Lori!! Jan

My DH helped me get the new flower bed along the sides and behind the shed tilled last weekend and I planted lots of stuff. Hopefully will start on the porch with posts next weekend.

& I've got an old lawn spreader planted sitting next to the tree.

My DH cut an old screen door down for me today for my little shed. And then I used an old garden tool for the door handle. Think I'll move the handle lower but I kinda like it. I think the shed is now DONE unless I decide to add a couple old porch posts. If so, that will wait till next summer. Hope these pics work. They are on facebook as I can't get pics to upload where I normally host them.

You, your dad and your DH did an awesome job on your shed! I love it! Very rustic looking. Love the addition of the screen door and the old garden tool for a handle. I see you didn't let any dust settle under your feet when decorating it! Love your new additions. Can't wait for next spring when you can add some plants and flowers to the mix. Keep those pictures coming!
