My story made short: I live in upstate South Carolina. I started a vineyard of 76 vines in around '98. Wine grapes. After all that time only a couple harvests. :-( If it wasn't birds, it was black rot, or japanese beetles, or hornets. Eventually the whole thing succumbed to Pierce's disease. Double :-( I razed it all. It was also 15 miles away, so I couldn't keep constant tabs on it.

I've since restarted this spring here at home with a modest 20 vines: Chambourcin ("PD tolerant") and Cynthiana/Norton ("PD resistant"). 10 of each. So far, so good. However...

When I moved to this house in '94 there were already 3 old scuppernong vines. A few years ago the oldest one, died of PD. Pity. It was male and made a fantastic canopy over the pergola without the sour fruit and bird droppings. It's trunk was easily a foot in circumference! Now the other 2 are showing some odd symptoms, so I thought I'd ask you guys your opinion as to what you think is going on so I can stop it before it spreads to my babies.

I'm attaching a pic. In it you can see the dried out brown spots and the pale green spots which is how they begin. To the right on the cane you can also see an ovoid, sunken brown lesion.

Well, thoughts as to what's the deal and remedies are eagerly sought!

You sure can't be faulted for lack of trying. If I lived in upstate SC, I wouldn't be growing grapes at all, in fact I found out years ago they are not worth growing in Northern Virginia, at least with my technology. Just too many fungal and insect problems, not to mention PD. I know there are some commercial vineyards in Virginia, but they take a lot of inputs.

In your location, I would probably be growing a high-yield trailing blackberry like Doyle or Triple Crown. More fruit volume per length of trellis than grapes, and they make an excellent wine with real fruit flavor. And no fungal or insect problems at all.

Those are galls. Maybe tumid gall maker. Most healthy plants can survive galls. There are chemicals to control but they are very expensive. What kind of grape is it? Most native types are not harmed by gall maker.

Smintheus, downy can look quite a bit different depending on the weather, time of season, etc so I would double-verify it is not downy. I say this also because I can't think of any other grape disease sounding anything like your described symptoms. Some pictures could help us. I would also look closely to verify it is not aphids. Scott

Jordan: If it were Pierce's disease then for your vines there won't be a next year, they'd be dead. That disease is an issue only in warm winter climates. Where do you live? The lower right pic looks like it might be phylloxera. What does the other side of leaf look like where those round spots are on top surface? Nothing on your vines says they might die next year. It's normal for leaves to look ratty this time of yr.
