Pruning apple trees in summer

Hi all,

I was hoping to prune my large apple tree this summer, even though I know "everyone" says to prune in the winter. The tree did not set any fruit due to some nights in the low 20's during bloom, and I did not get around to pruning this past winter.

So, instead of waiting till winter to prune, I was thinking that I could do this now without worrying about losing any fruit, and the new growth would be of fruiting age the year after next. Does this sound logical?

I imagine that summer pruning is frowned upon because of damage to the fruit crop at the time, which I don't have to worry about, and possibly because of sap leakage and the reduction of energy by removing some of the foliage.

Are there any other major reasons not to prune in summer? Summer pruning is appropriate for so many other plants, that I just have to question the winter pruning only doctrine for apple trees.

Can anyone shed some light on this?
