good gene, bad gene

You know how, you can look like another member of your family? And sometimes that's good & sometimes that's bad? Welllll, yesterday, when I was getting ready for work, I looked in the mirror and saw a family member! Yup! & she's the first picture in "our" family album. I'm not sure where that gene came from.

Be very aware that the "Old Woman" who moved in over here plays all kinds of tricks and pranks with mirrors. The other day when I stepped out of the shower she was actually standing in my mirror showing her droopy 'back side'!!!!! I said "that's disgusting and now you've gone too far". Her illusions are clever and only designed to tease us. Ignore it!

At least she chose a "familiar" face to imitate for you Vickie. I dont reccognise whose 'back side' that was but it's wasn't mine. Nope.

You don't always need a mirror to see her either.

Why, the other day, I looked down at my hands...and they had been replaced with hands just like my grandmother's!

I was afraid that heat was causing my problems. Most of my plants are in the shade atleast 6 hours of the day after the first of June. The ones that I use the most are in light dappled shade more than that. I know I lose bud quantity by not being in more sun but since I'm fighting the heat, I figured the shade from my big old oaks would help. This year our weather was really freaky. It was so cool in April and the first of May that I didn't start having blooms until the last week of May. I usually have some the first week in May and by the second week, I'm getting around 100 blooms a day. So, the blooms were late and then, Blammm!! It goes from 40 at night to 95 in the day and the lows only in the 70s. I dare not even try to explain how high the humidity was. Next year, I'm going to be up before dawn putting on pollen. I hate getting up early, but I hate worse working 4 hours everyday for nothing. No, I don't freeze my pollen. I leave it in the vials, in my cool home until I get ready to use it. I don't know the science behind pollen, so I hope pollen doesn't "die" for the lack of a better word??? I did freeze some the first year, but it would sweat in the vials before I could use it and this just didn't work for me. My blooms usually don't have fluffy pollen until around 10am. The ones in the early morning sun fluff up first and then the ones in the shade will be ready to gather by the time I finish gathering the ones in the sun. It's amazing, the little bitty bees can sniff out dry pollen the second it gets ready and they are gone with it before I can get to it!! I use the little light weight hair nets to keep the bees off if they really get to greedy. I sure appreciate the feed back. I thought maybe you had a magic potion to hold the pollen to the pistol or something when you said you were getting such high success. I even wondered if some were wetting the pistol since I see so many photos made with water showing on the petals. Ya'll made me feel some better. Now, I'm going to work on getting my plants in good shape for next year. I need to repot about 300 pots and it will probably take atleast 600 pots to put them into. Sooo I have a lot of potting to do. Any recommendations on good fertilize. I'm using Mircle Grow garden soil in my pots and topping them off with mini pine bark mulch and using MG slow release fertilze. It gets expensive to repot this way, but when you think about paying $50 for one fan, using $3 worth of soil to put it in, isn't outrageous. I just haven't been able to pay $250 for one fan. I'd have to sleep with it to make sure the ______!!! voles didn't eat it. While I'm asking, what's your favorite parents this year? I'm going to purchase about 10 plants later this year, and I'm wanting to get the best pod builders I can. One more question: When the bud count is listed in the description, does this mean the total buds on all scapes for the year?? I have never seen a scape with 50 buds on it. I do good to get 15, most of mine is 8 to 10. I do have some that say they should have 35 - 40. Have a great day, Mona

Graduating from corn popper coffee roaster to Gene Cafe? Behmor?

I have been roasting with a GeneCafe for a few years. Mine has been a good roaster. Not as good now that the company sold out and the new owner does not allow do-it yourself fixes of minor problems. As I have heard you have to ship the whole thing back to have them fix it. The tech person at the original firm was glad to help with problems and let you fix it yourself. Nonetheless, once I learned the art of using it I get really good results. It is not automatic and there are "profiles" that you must learn to do. Here is an example: Weigh 227 grams (1/2 pound) of beans. Turn on the roaster and set to 5 minutes at 350* to preheat. Do an emergiency stop. Dump in the beans and put the cylinder back on the roaster as fast as you can so you don't burn out the heating element. Set the time to 17 minutes and the temperature to 473*. Restart the roaster. After about 10 minues listen carefully to hear the first pop of the beans cracking (first crack). Continue roasting for about 1.5 minutes and then cut the temperature to 462*. Continue roasting until the desired color is achieved or at most 2 more minutes. Do an emergiency stop and dump the beans into a fast cooler such as a colander over a vacuum to suck the heat out of the beans as fast as you can. Store the beans open to the air for 1 day, then close the container and store for 2-7 days depending on the bean. Grind and brew. If you want to get into this hobby, I suggest you join one of the online coffee roasting clubs. There you will find fellow roasters asking and commenting about the machine you are using. I belong to several, but mostly go to "greencoffeebuyingclub.com". There are pros there that search for great buys on green beans and distribute them to fellow members at a fair price. In English it means you carry the gene(s) believed responsible for causing cancer and, potentially, you could develop cancer at an early age. Therefore, you should begin having mammograms at an earlier age, say 35 instead of 50. As you said, the best news is that you don't have it now! Hugs and best of luck!

in our ground freeze.. rather than TX.. move it now.. or thru sept ... so it had time to settle in.. and not heave during winter. as well as store some energy in new roots for next spring .. basically .... we are giving it up for this year... what-evs... and setting it up for next spring ... tape it up.. dig gob size of shovel.. once lose.. leave it there.. go dog same size hole.. bring soil back here.. grab plant with shovel.. take to new hole.. insert the whole mess in the new hole.. set water on trickle for an hour or so.. refill old hol ... if you get it right.. the plant may never know it moved.. its not that large.. that it might not fit on a shovel ... ken

I received a poem in ths vein! No author given tho! RockAway Rest Home Christmas "Twas the night before Christmas at Rock-Away Rest,and all of us seniors were looking our best. Our glasses how sparkly,our winkles,how merry;Our punch bowl held prune juice plus 3 drops of sherry. A bedsock was taped to each walker,in hopes that Santa would bring us soft candy & soap. We surely were lucky to be there with friends, secure in this residence & our Depends. Our grandkids had sent us some Christmasy crafts, like angels in snowsuits & penguins on rafts. The dental assistant had borrowed our teeth,and from them she'd crafted a wreath. The bed pans so shiny, still all in a row, reflecting our candles magnificent glow. Our supper so festive-the joy wouldn't stop...it was creamy warm oatmeal with sprinkles on top. Our salad was Jello so jiggly & great, then puree of fruitcake was spooned on each plate. The social director then had us play games, like "Where are you living?" & "What are your names?" Old Grandfather Looper was feeling his oats,proclaiming that reindeer are nothing but goats. Our resident wand'er was tied to her chair in hopes that at bedtime she would still be there. Security lights on the new fallen snow made outdoors seem noon to the old folks below. Then out on the porch there arose quite a clatter (but we were so deaf that it just didn't matter). A strange little fellow flew in through the door, he tripped on the sill & fell flat on the floor. 'Twas just our director,all togged out in red. He jiggled & chuckled & patted each head. We knew from the way he strutted & jived, our social security checks had just arrived. We sang-how we sang- in our monotone crock,till the clock tingled out its soft 8 o'clock stroke. And soon we were snuggling deep in our beds, while nurses distributed nocturnal meds. And so ends our Christmas at Rock-a Way- Rest 'Fore long you'll be with us. We wish you the best! Then she writes "Want to share a room?" So hope you enjoy this & fact that the Old Woman is in your mirror & not in here!! Happy New Year! Jan

OMG...this is a hoot!!

I love what you wrote at the end. We certainly do need to be thankful!! I much prefer to deal with the pranks of the Old Woman and Old Man than have to eat puree of fruitcake!! YUCK! LOL

Great story Jan!!!!

I use to go to a nursing home every Wednesday for a Church thing. Your story gave me mental visuals of all of my elder friends. Going there helped me to learn that even though growing older is not easy and many times there is disease, it is still where we are all headed.

I used to dress my little grandbabylove (at ages 4 & 5 at the time) in a cowgirl costume and take her to sing. I also took her in a ballet costume to dance. She called them the "Grandmas and Grandpas". She is not afraid of older folks at all now. I think we should expose our children and ourselves to the care facilities so that we are not afraid of the unknown. And let's laugh at ourselves as we travel through each phase of this life.

When I was a teenager,my Mom took care of her parents, after grandmother was crippled by a stroke. She did not have any training as a gereatric nurse and she unhappily struggled for years. She did not reccognise dementia symptoms and was always angry with her Dad. There was no BINGO, Church services, arts/crafts, peer group, or general medical attention. I have instructed my children to put me in a care facility where there is a cook, a laundry washer, a nurse, a bed pan emptier ect and NO TEENAGERS!!! LOL. My mom tried to do it all and she just could not do it with a possitive attitude. Not all of our children are capable of being 24 hour nurses for us. I truly insist on going to a home. I'm already planning how I will decorate my room there. LOL
