FN is correct and if you are getting the rain I'm getting it's been a lot, although I've not seen any cracking on the varieties of A. pears I'm managing. I suspect the smooth and thin skinned 20th century would be susceptible, but you may also be getting longer wet periods than we are. Or your tree might not be in full sun, which makes cracking worse. Graft a couple other varieties on the tree and enjoy a wider span of harvest, more variety and maybe less susceptibility to cracking. I suggest Korean Giant for your area.

Sharppa, From what I've gathered from several experts here, for peach, each problem is treated with different chemicals at different time. Peach leaf Curl and backterial leaf spot, I use copper during dormant season. I use copper hydroxide (Kocide 3000) in late fall and early spring. For brown rot, some use Monterey Fungi Fighter about a month before harvest. Otheres use Captan (which also helps with peach scab). I have not used any. So far, brown rot is not too severe for me (yet). Peach scab, some use Captan, I use wettable sulfur (not as effective but, to me, it's less harmful than Captan). You should add sticker such as Bonide Turbo or NuFilm 17 so the chemicals stay on trees longer. As for insects, I also use Triazicide but some here don't think it works for them. I work for me. I don't use immunox on peach. It does not help. Immunox is famous for preventing Cedar Apple Rust on apples in the spring. I'll see if I could answer your Asian pears on another post. I have 4 Asian pear varieties and more than 4 pear problems!!! By the way, what part of the country you live. It can make a difference.

Buyali: In the absence of a photo, you could give us a better description of just how high you are placing the grafts on the rootstocks. If they are close to the ground, your problem could as well be rabbits as deer. If you suspect animals of some type, the rootstock may have to be protected with a circle of wire. You describe the damage as on the "tip of the emerging leaf", which would tend to suggest insects, but many types of insects eat and move on, and would no longer be on the leaves when you look at them with your magnifier. I don't know what active ingredient is contained in Wilson's Bug Spray (the label should say), but it may not be effective against what you are targeting. Try malathion or permethrin. I don't think I would put grease on my rootstocks. If it is petroleum-based grease, it could damage the tissue. Don Yellman, Great Falls, VA

It looks sort of like cork and it is by the surface of the pear. Each spot is something like 1/8" or so (bigger or smaller as well). I think Geraldo may have it there; bitter pit is primarily a problem on apples but I have also seen it on my asian pears. One last long shot is stink bugs, but these mainly deform the fruit and you did not mention deformed fruit. See good link below for more information on bitter pit including treatment.
