Can someone explain what's going on here?

For many years--over 15--I had a type of onion that I bought seed for called Evergreen Bunching Onions. They were like scallions and spun off other scallions to make a good sized bunch. When you wanted scallions, you just reached down into the clump and cut off one. Every few years I divided and reset the clumps. I gave away plants too. The plants overwintered for all those years, but a few winters ago I lost them. (And no one I gave them too took care of theirs, so those are gone too.)

So I ordered new seed from Johnny's. But the onions, which did overwinter, never spun off new plants. They just made one enormous scallion. So this year I tried seed from Pinetree--Evergreen Bunching Onions. Same thing. One huge scallion.

I'd really like to find the true Evergreen Bunching, and I'd like to know too what's going on here.
