I saw this on Carol's (my wife) wine making forum. Let's have a chat post!!!! I feel like I know all of you so well! You have encouraged me and inspired me! Sooooo, on Saturday, November 29th, at 7:00 p.m. (PST), I'm going to start a LIVE post to chat on the CONVERSATIONS side! Join in!!! I think it will be LOTS of fun! We can talk about garden creations, Secret Santa, whatever pops into our minds!! Won't this be FUN!!!? Whoever joins in, I'll see ya there! Bear Hugs! Kirk P.S. oh gosh, I forgot!! til I just saw this post, how could I have forgotten? sinus headache, 5 year old with bronchitis and 4 breathing treatments a day........I was just lounging in the bedroom watching horror movies and I coulda been here! is this just a one time thing???? We at the Kitchen Table have a chat room available all the time... One of the ladies set it up. We used to go there every night...we got to know each other quite well.. But a couple of them got jobs and couldn't stay up until all hours of the night like some of us....LOL Every now and then I'll post that I'm going to chat and leave a link...then some will come over and chat. It sounds like you have everything set up very well to be successful with mason bees. You should have a nice long bloom period with all those different kinds of fruit trees. One note on pears - the nectar tends to be rather thick and the bees find it less desireable than the other fruits. You can get better pollinaton on the pears if you keep them well watered during the bloom period. This will thin the nectar a little. After two weeks from the first emergence you can take the straws out of the cardboard tubes and open them up to see if there are still some mason bees in there. The easiest way I've found is to unroll the paper straws along the spriral joint. The brown leathery cocoons can be placed behind the chicken wire to let the bees chew their way out. You could open the cocoons and let them out right away, but it's not easy to cut the leathery material without harming the bees inside. When you open the straws, check the unfilled chambers carefully. If you see something that looks like a fine pinkish sawdust it could be mites. If you find anything like this, seal it in a plastic bag and throw it in the garbage (or burn it). Actually, it would be a good idea to take everything except the cocoons and put it in plastic bags in the garbage. One final thought - 10 acres is a lot of fruit trees. Consider putting up 1 or 2 more nests spread out throughout the trees to keep the flight distances shorter. One hundred yards is the general rule of thumb for the maximum distance from nest to flowers.

Trueblue....Thank you so much..I just hope I don't have a problem with wilt on my Clematis..I'm also hoping it is pretty much hardy and disease resistent..If not, I am in trouble..lol Do you recomend a certain way of planting it? Oh, Logees' was bearable..I did go with Rose and Wes..lol That place always smells so good and so much to chosse from...It's funny though..Every time I go there, I am made to realize I already have most of the ones they have..ha..I am always on the prowl for something new, different and a plant that whaffs through the air! It was so warm in there too while it was cold outside..Sheesh, If I could only work there. I'm so glad you are interested in this idea. I've been thinking about doing it for quite some time. Just sign onto the Conversations side of the forum at 7 p.m. (PST) Saturday night and we can chat!!! This will be sooooooo much FUN!!!! Why not just chat in a real "chatroom"? You could do that on my blog(-: I have a live chatroom if anyone is interested? It would be real time. The pictures won't work I don't think but the chatroom works just fine. You don't have to register if you don't want to either.

whoops forgot the link. Click below... Feel free to chat whenever you want. Some people have IM's but I find IM's to be a pain unless you really want to sit and chat all the time because once someone gets your IM name whenever you sign on you may be asked to chat. Chatrooms are great and you can chat whenever you feel like it.

Gonna brew a pot of coffee just to stay up until 10EST lol. I've been going to bed with the chickens since the grandkids are here visiting.

I'd like to join in with all of you but HOLY CATS! thats 10pm in PA and I go to bed early. Plus I'm on call for work, so unless I'm coming home from work at 10pm on Sat night, I will be joining in my dreams only. I feel bad too because I made a pre2009 resolution to contribute more to Garden Junk instead of just lurking in the shadows!! Melvie

I will try to be here also. I have never really done a live chat on a forum. Not sure how well it will work. I am game for trying it and if it does not flow well we can always borrow Cindees chatroom later. (PLLLLeaaasee Cindee would you be kind enough to let us borrow if the chat on here won't work?)

Cindee has been soooo kind to let us use her chatroom if the forum idea doesn't work... We'll have to each download a free program if we don't have it on our computers. It'll be much faster Cindee's way. Will play around with it before Saturday. This will be soooo much fun no matter how we do it. Thanks for letting me experiment with the idea.
