Too late to plant honeydew melons?

My watermelons bit the dust, not really sure what went wrong (except attack of the squash bugs).

I have a volunteer in my compost pile, that might save the day.

I would like to plant something else (honeydews) and since we have such a long growing season here, with only minimal cold late in the year (like late Nov/Dec).

I thought it might work, anyone have any experience with it here in GA or similiar climates?

Most varieties are 81-90 DTM so you will most likely have to provide frost protection later on. Really pushing the time frame because unless you have transplants you have add on germination time to that. But it be done. Try to find a short DTM variety for better chances.

No way here. Even the short season cultivars can't handle cool nights and short daylight. I plant them around April 15. Still harvesting a few.

I planted seeds. I typically plant seeds around June 1st unless it's been an unusually warm May. I've tried planting in May before but the seeds just won't germinate until the soil warms up.

How tall was your hill? A planting mound should only be about three inches tall, or the water can't reach the seeds/roots. If you want to give it another go, soak your seeds overnight in water to make them sprout faster. It is iffy as to whether you have enough growing time left in your zone. Lorna

Is it too late to direct sow cukes or melons?

How many days for the melons? I just sowed some 75 day ones 2 weeks ago. Have a second round of French cukes to sow for fall harvesting. Swiss Chard just popping thru Tonight sowing the 68 day corn. The fall cauliflower and broccoli plants just poked thru for planting in July I figure my frost date at October 15th.

It might be a litte late. I have faced a similar problem, the watermelon and cantelope both were eaten before I could cage them and I had to replant them directly from seed last week. They just came up yesterday. With waiting until the middle of June, I would definitely expect very late crop if even that. I did see a website saying planting from seeds after the 1st of may is pointless so we may both be doomed. Good luck. Tina

I believe farmer is correct. Cantaloupes just don't sweeten well late in the season. Watermelons can oft times.
