Plubienewbie2, Do check for spider mites. If they are present,then you can treat. When i did view your trees, i did notice that the soil looked rather rich and heavy, but i didnt want to say anything since its not the time to repot. Since you did mention that you will repot this summer, then i would definately go to a lighter mix and think twice before you add fine sand into the mix. IMO... ther are all sorts of mixes available and easy one to make up. Especially since you used the soil from another pot!!! Yikes!!! : ) They are doing well for the winter. Keep an eye on the water . DOnt use to much during the winter. I bet you will see a big improvement this summer when you repot in a better draining mix!!! I am still very happy with the way your trees look, especially in the middle of the winter. You will have leaf loss. If you think you have spider mites, it can be fixed quite quickly since they haven;t damaged your plants to much. look under the leaves and on top and really give them a good check. He lives in Utah and has many beautiful tropicals as well as these awesome Palms planted in the ground. He truly is a "zone pusher" He does use lights in the winter, but that usually isnt a problem. Was your tree in pot when you bought it? Potted trees often are root bound and hold tightly to the medium they were planted in. Did you spread out the roots before you planted. That could be why the roots cannot fully function. Like others say, over or under watering could kill a tree. I feel that your issue is the roots not functioning properly.

I would do what advice most experienced ppl do here, which is check soil way deep down w/ chopstick to see if its still wet near bottom of pot before watering. Yes, I use Miracle Grow feet. In yellow bottle, 1/4 tsp per gallon at EVERY watering, year round. Except for this plant. MIL did not want me to fertilize it, idk why. Your soil is most likely bagged soil, & I never had luck w/ that. I didn't really become good w/ plant keeping until I switched from bagged soils to Al's 511 mix. Look up on here an article called "good growing practices". Idh the link to it handy. Sorry. I'm thinking maybe your plant is root bound.

If plant gets lanky, it s best to behead it. My chroma grew one of the long stem too, and I have to do it yet - maybe I'll wait until Spring. I probably will cut it where the black line is since there is an offset growing lower on the stem: You can also see one dry leaf - that is normal ageing and will soon fall off (or I'll pick it off). As plant ages, and receives enough light, stems should become harder and corkier too. How much sunlight are yours receiving? To make sure it doesn't happen again (stem rotting), perhaps increase drainage. Your mix looks like it has quite a bit of perlite or pumice, but iI am looking only at the photo. If your mix contains lots of peat, there is a chance it may create problem: if kept dry, peat becomes hydrophobic. Another possibility is to use topdressing of gravel - it keeps stems and/or lowest leaves away from moisture. Some ppl do not like topdressing, but I use it on almost all my plants (all succulents, and most non-succulents too). ETA: gravel topdressing helps to keep stems upright too. Your plant is mostly green and that suggests to me that it was kept in relatively low light. Low light is also cause of week stems. Another is that rosette is not as compact.
