Melons Turning Black

A friend asked me a question about watermelon problems, and I can't find an answer. Her watermelons on a sunny southern balcony turn black from the STEM end. I can't find a disease or insect problem that causes this. She is growing potatoes and beans just fine.

My best guess is squash borer beetles just causing the fruits to die further along the vine, but she can't find the usual signs of them (holes, "sawdust").

Any ideas?
