Does anyone know what is wrong with this dwarf peach?

Hello!

I've never posted here before, I usually hang out at the Winter Sowing forum.

I have had this dwarf peach in a large container for a few years. I think it is called a Patio Peach. Most springs it has straight leaves, and I think by this time at least the beginnings of lovely pink blossoms. But now it has oddly curled leaves, something is wrong. does anyone know what?

Your little peach tree has a serious case of peach leaf curl. This is a fungal disease that must be prevented before it starts, and that means dormant spraying both in late fall, and in early spring just before bud break with a strong dormant copper spray such as Kocide. PLC overwinters on the tree itself.

The tree will probably survive this episode, but perhaps not the next.

Would Neem Oil help? Or "Concern"? It is a Copper Soap Fungicide. I am asking about those two things because I have them on hand.

Is the eye discharge foamy? Could be Infectious Coryza. I don't know offhand if that particular disease affects turkeys, but I'd suggest researching on the web respiratory diseases in turkeys and see what you can dig up. Different drugs treat different diseases, so be sure to get the correct drug and follow label instructions for dosing turkeys. If you suspect a contagious disease, I'd treat them all. Whether it's an illness or adjusting to a new home & people, it's stressful so give them unflavored Pedialyte to drink (at the grocery store in the baby aisle) to boost their electrolytes. Keeping them warm and quiet and out of drafts can also help them to get better. Extra goodies such as live mealworms or crickets will give them an extra protein boost and they LOVE them. Fresh greens and such are also good--anything that keeps them eating, occupied and happy--and for birds such as chickens and turkeys, eating = happy. :) Velvet ~:>

Deanna: I too had the same problem in Z6 for the past 2 years (this is my 3rd). I have a Jackmani and Henryi next to it. No problem with H. but my J. started turning the mottled color 3 yrs ago. Thinking hubby hit it with Weed n Feed, I waited and about 1/2 the lower greens turned a yellow green veined look BUT produced perfect flowers on the upper green leaves..looked terrible though! After posting, I got a bit of help...Jeanne in TX is right....I had to top dress last year and add nutrients. Also possibly ground is so poor it will not release the proper nutrients if you have them. This year (3 yrs later and putting blue tarps down to prevent the Weed n Feed problem), it only has about 1/5 of the greens that way....not perfect but improving and looks less. I also was going to dig and toss if not improved this year...I can now save it!!! It took a few years to get in this condition and will take a few to get out of it...patience please. Use that manure for sure and Epsom salts too. Check with your nursery person also...mine indicated LEAF CHLOROSIS for which I also used Iron Sulfate by Bionide...look that up on the Internet...this has helped a lot. My look is somewhat different than your look though. E-mail me and I can send photos of mine from last year vs. this year...can't figure how to get photos onto here. Best of luck. Ginny B.

Well, in their defense... Yesterday the HVAC guy ran into much bigger problems than he expected so he was at my house longer than they scheduled. BUT he called in to base and reported it so that they could make arrangements with the next person on his list. I guess I'm lucky that he was delayed at my house and not on the way to it AND that this business respects their clients enough to make the tough call to say we're running behind or can't get there. In this day & age of everybody and their mother (or their 5 year old) having a cell phone, there is no excuse for not calling you to report the delay or reschedule. Why would they want to show up at the next job with the homeowner already annoyed with them? We all can understand problems develop but there's no excuse not to call & tell you that. I guess if they're the only game in town they feel they can be rude but it's really basic human decency, along with good business practice, to do what you can to keep the other person informed and prepared. That guy has some bad Karma coming his way.

Mine always have that banged up look =S Luckily, they grow new leaves rather easily. I remove all mechanically damaged leaves. Here's what mine looks like now: These below have teeth marks from one of my critters. I caught the cute pup jauntily walking across the room with one of these rosettes in her mouth =O I'm letting them sit for a few days before re-potting.

Once curl is underway, the affected leaves cannot be saved, and the disease must run its course. As far as I have been able to determine, neem oil is useless except for its fragrant perfume, and if it's the copper soap fungicide from Gardens Alive! that is worse than useless.

Peach leaf curl is a disease that must be prevented by eradicating the overwintering spores from the tree, and that is done with a strong copper spray like Kocide with a high percentage of fixed copper. Copper soap, which is around 2 percent fixed copper, will not cut the mustard even as a dormant spray. Peach leaf curl is a serious disease and requires serious medicine.

Curl normally dies out as warm weather arrives. It prospers best in the cool, rainy weather of early spring, so hope for warm, dry weather.
