Best way to irrigate 20 potted blueberry plants from rain tank?
Comments (5)I did the whole automated rain water thing for a year before I had to rip it all out because of moving to temporary house. I did learn that the best spray heads were the ones that send out 8 streams water in a circular direction and each head can be adjusted for optimal flow. On 15 gallon pots and smaller 1 spray head was plenty but needed to be adjusted depending on how big the pot was. On my big 30 gallon pots I used 3 spray heads and dialed them back to achieve the desired wetting pattern. I got a 2.5 hp pump to run it and it did fine for 10 plants at a time. My timer was set up on 3 zones, 10 plants at a time. I had to run the discharge pressure at 40-50 psi to get enough flow to the plants. To achieve the desired pressure I had to install circulation line with a valve coming of the discharge back to the rain tank and adjust the valve position to get 40-50 psi going to the plants. After toying with it a while and getting all the spray heads adjusted properly it was very nice!!!!!!!! I will never go back to hand watering again once our new house is built and every things automated again. One suggestion is to have a manifold with a 200 micron screen/filter for every zone. I had to clean the screens once every couple months with a tooth brush. I hand watered 50 something plants every day for several years and I'm here to tell you that automation is the way to go!!! I will never look back. Stay away from drip. Rain water is too dirty and you will have nothing but problems with drip. 1/2 inch Polly tube and the little 1/8 hose to a spray head that adjusts flow on a stick is the only way to go. The spray heads need to be the ones that send 8 individual streams. I can't stress that enough as all the other fan heads and bubbler heads clog up all the time....See MoreNeed advice for storing potted trees during winter
Comments (12)I purchased 7 bareroot apples from Stark last summer during their sale. I planted them in pots and never got around to planting them in fall, so I overwintered them. I placed the pots as tight together as I could against the wall of my garage, but outside. Ideally I suppose I should have covered them with leaves and tried to get a tarp over them, but I was unable to do so. The only protection that they got was that I'd shovel snow over top of the pots every time that it snowed here, so they were under a pile of snow for at least 50% of the winter. I'm in zone 5A and they came out of the winter fine, are in the ground now and have broken dormancy and look fantastic. I'm not suggesting that trying to overwinter potted trees in cold areas is ideal, but if you have to do it and can give them any protection, they'll likely be OK. Admittedly, we had a fairly mild winter this year but were still sub-zero quite a few times....See MoreWhat to do with pots during winter?
Comments (7)snow is irrelevant, except in the sense of crushing a plant ... water accumulation in the problem .. and i dont recall what your potting media is ... it should NOT be a high peat mix ... peat holds too much water ... sometimes you can find STRAW .. not hay ... after Halloween for the taking ... hay is animal food .. and has seeds .. which can be a nightmare if you use it in the garden next year ... straw is the bottom part.. and has 99% less seed .... but free is free ... but i dont know what salt marsh hay is ... i would just get 4 ... make a square.. and put the pots inside ... do NOT leave the pot edge in the sun ... make sure it is all shaded ... the pots can go in the ground now if you want.. no need to wait until late fall when the ground is not workable.. as soon as you remove whatever is there.. just stick the pots in ... another option.. is to collect some larger pots .... fill bottom with bark or course mulch.. then insert pots ... and fill edges with same .... so that the interior pot stays cold .... and if you buy some bark fines.. you can use that next year .. to make a better potting media for trees/conifers ... it SEEMS .... you are ignoring the potting media as an issue ... either you fully understand what we are talking about [will mentions it] .. or you are not understanding how important it is ... if you are using a very high peat .. perennial mix.. you might want to repot them NOW.. to insure drainage ... now .. in my z5 .... is a perfect time to be bare rooting and planting trees .. ken...See MoreWhat do you with plants indoors during winter?
Comments (5)Hi Ann, Usually the plant will branch after it flowers. Some people cut their branches to make it branch out more, bur from what I read here on the forum, that delays the flowering, which is what most of us want. I read on here that you can help the flowering by the addition of a fertilizer in which the middle number is high. I think mine that I use is 10-50-10. I have also read that you want to stop feeding at approximately 90 days prior to the onset of the plant going dormant for the winter. After winter, when the plant wakes up, I read it is best to start off with a fertilizer that is higher on the first number. That promotes the growth, and then switch to the higher second number. As far as the time lines, I can't remember excatly when to switch. Someone smarter than me, and there are a bunch of them in here, will help you further. Hope that helps a little.
