bought blackberries with buds, starting to fruit, ok to plant?

I have done way too much impulse buying this spring, the most recent being blackberry (thornless, apache and navaho I think) plants that have started to bud and one has a fruit or two starting. They range in size from 1-2 feet tall, not sure how old they are.

My question is should I leave them in their containers this summer and plant in the fall? They will be planted in a spot that gets sun until mid afternoon.

I planned on using a trellis for these. Any reason to not trellis them if they are in pots until fall?

Liable to do much better planted out than baking in pots all summer, with no place for their roots to go.

bks I would not be too worried about planting the blackberries if you have had as much rain as we have had in Ky.Theweather has not been real warm. As long as you have means to water if it does turn hot and dry i say try it.There is still a lot of moisture in the ground.Good luck from the yardnut.

Unfortunately, that article although very informative discusses for the most part how a large commercial berry farm manages their berry operations. For me I have 2+ acres of thornless and a few thorny U-Pick blackberry plants, all of which are straped to 4-wire trelleses. I use 4 wires a little over a foot apart to keep my erect-style three-foot spaced primocanes which get tipped between 4-5' from falling into the rows after high winds or heavy rains come through. Because I have the extra wires (they say 2 is normal), I strap my primocane laterals in a fanned style which result in 5-6' high bushes. When I applied the theory of pruning laterals back to 12-18' as documented on the UNC Small Fruit Consortium website as well as others, I lost almost 20% in U-Pick production this past year when compared to the previous year when I left the laterals to their own demise. So, this year I compromised and last month I tipped the last 2-4" off each applicable lateral to remove their respective terminal buds (if that's what they are) to see if that gets my U-Pick production back to where it should be. We'll see how it goes. Thanks again for your help giving me new places to look. I'm not sure on the details of your particular blackberry variety, but here's the way it should work with any normal blackberry (the non-primocane fruiting kinds). You get a blackberry root cutting, seedling, or small plant and it will begin to grow primocanes in the first year. During winter it will go dormant and then in spring it will re-emerge with foliage and flower growth on last year's primocane, which is now called a floricane. Additionally a new primocane(s) will begin to emerge. The floricanes will flower and fruit and then die after fruiting. The new primocane will continue to grow through the season and then go dormant in winter to start the whole cycle over again. My guess is that the growth you have on your blackberry are primocanes or they may have not had enough chill hours. Hope that helps!

Kelton, Has your lot been cleared recently (within the last few years)? The reason I ask is that redbuds will almost always resprout in that situation. You may have well established root systems sending up shoots. Also, even if the ones you are seeing are new seedlings (not regrowth), they have a much better root system than your transplants. Redbuds are notorious for being finicky to transplant. The ones you planted will only start growing at rates similar to permanent residents when their root system catches up with them. It usually takes a while for a redbud to decide it even wants to live when transplanted. Chris, Transplanting redbuds may be more difficult than many other trees, but it can be done. Most of the redbuds you see at nurseries are pot grown and root pruned. If you do decide to transplant yours and they make it after the trauma, give them a few years to get established and then chop them off at ground level just above the root collar in late winter/very early spring. Chances are about 97.643% (or at least real good) that they will resprout, and when they do, they'll send up a few nice straight trunks fairly quickly. Just remove all but one shortly after you see them, and keep an eye on the one you keep to make sure it develops a good branching habit, etc.

I had the same impression: it has blackberry jam flavor, but it is just a hint, with mostly hard seeds in a tiny fruit. Hardly worth eating except as a novelty. But the flowers are beautiful and fragrant. Remember, wild bananas started out mostly seeds and not a sweet flavor.

Get the plants into the ground as soon as possible. The canes on the plants, which represent last year's growth, may die back and lose their blooms and fruit, but that is of little importance. The important thing is that the roots are kept alive and healthy, and send up new canes this summer which will bear for you next season.

So don't be too concerned if the leaves, blossoms and fruit on the canes don't make it. The future is beneath those canes, and that is what matters.

We have been having a heat wave up here (80s) but it will go back down to more typical spring MI temps this weekend so I do not think the weather will be a problem!

Do keep the soil moist for a few weeks. Later transplants can get fried&dried if you are not careful with them. I was out early this morning watering my baby pomegranates which were looking a little sad in the recent heat. After a few weeks they have largely adapted and you don't want them constantly wet after that or they can get root diseases.
