How long for bare root pomegranate to leaf out?

I ordered a bare root angel red pomegranate from Willis Orchards. Pleading ignorance, my wife and I were surprised that it was delivered bare-branched, as well! Having never purchased bare root before, I always thought that just meant the tree was dug in the field and had the soil removed from around the roots for shipping. A call to Willis educated me to the fact that the tree was dormant (so I assume it had been kept in cold storage) and should leaf out "in a few weeks." It was planted May 5, and still shows no sign of lifek, not even a hint of a leaf bud. In the experience of you experts here, about how long should we expect for it to leaf out, here in Louisiana?

I'm not an expert, but I've planted a lot of bare root trees. Last year I planted a BR pomegranate in Feb, and it did nothing through May, so I assumed it was probably dead and ordered a potted Pom from someone else. The original Pom started leafing out about a week after I planted the second one beside it. You can always start snapping off the furthest out twigs. If they're soft or green, you're in business. If they're dry or dead, keep snapping down. Even if they're dead all the way down, the roots may send up new shoots which is still ok because Poms aren't grafted.

That's encouraging, at least, fruithack. It just seems like a long time, this time of year, for it to leaf out. Patience is not my strongest virtue, but I will give it some more time. Anyone else, like in my zone, have any experience to offer? Thanks.

thanks for all the support...I guess I'm not going to return the plants, my back is quickly improving...so a little at a time and I'll be ok... I do have a few additional questions though from the comments above "ghost" growth just want to make sure I"m not taking something off that would otherwise be ok...what I'm seeing is these little whitish colored shoots (for lack of a more technical name) now have leaves at the ends? is this a premature stem or just some weird mutant growth? Second question...do the roses need to be inside while soaking? I have several rain filled buckets out back (that I would not be able to move in) that I could put them in? But they'd be outside... I also do have several big tub with rope handles, they are very large, and could probably fit in a few of those...but do I just soak the roots or the whole plant? any pros or cons to this practice of soaking the whole thing?

Depends on the warmth of the soil and the variety. 'Honey Perfume' is a good bloomer. You should see blooms before mid-May. I planted my bareroots in early January. The one with the warmest soil already has tiny buds and 8" of new growth. Flowers maybe by early April. The other two in cooler soil spots are leafed out but probably won't bloom before mid-April. Even though I planted my bare-roots 6 or 7 weeks before yours...the warmth of the soil is a factor. Next time you are digging around in the garden, clear a spot a couple inches in depth and put your hand down and feel the temperature...repeat in areas with more or less sun...you'll be amazed at the difference.

So -- You planted this rose in May, in Southern California? That's pretty tough. May is late for planting here, and we had some very very hot weather this past May. You could cut a half-inch down, and see how it looks. I would also, however, contact the vendor. Tell them the rose was shipped dangerously late in the year for your zone, and ask them what procedure you follow, if it does not break dormancy, to get your money back. DO NOT let them offer to send you another plant now. At the link below, check the ratings on this vendor, at Daves Garden -- They are overwhelmingly negative. Bad sign. Meanwhile, keep watering it. No, no, no. White(ish), yellow(ish) or brown(ish) 'stalk' is a root. It should be placed flat on a ground with 'red (or white) buds' i.e. eyes pointing up. Then cover 'eyes' by 2" (not more, 1" is OK too) of soil. Make sure you have at least 7-8" (the more, the better) of good soil with plenty of organic matters below root. In any event, either you decide to keep it in a pot or plant directly in ground, you have to replant yours the right way. It's not necessary to grow peonies in a pot until maturity, however I'm myself rarely plant peonies directly into grounds and I think I have a good reason to do so. In general, peonies don't like to be transplanted and sometime may not bloom for year or two after being moved. Moving peonies should be done in a fall only. Contrary, potted peonies could be planted at any time of the year for as long as grounds are workable. After being planted in proper location they could live and prosper for many-many years if left undisturbed. So, one have to chose their location in a garden carefully with provisions for their future growth and for the growth of surrounding plants, shrubs and trees as well. Therefore, unless I'm absolutely positive about their placement, I pot them up in a fall, grow for two years until I see the flowers (to make sure they are true to the name or to my liking), move pots as many times as I wish to and during the second season plant them permanently. Even though ocassionaly I have to move them again which result in at least one year setback. Good luck.

I'm having the same problem here in Florida. I ordered a pomegranate from Willis. It arrived, looking like a few bare sticks with roots. I planted it and waited.....and waited......and waited. Finally called Willis and they said to scrape the bark and see if it was green underneath. It was and still is. But no growth, no green leaves, no new growth, nada, nil, zilch, nothing. I'll give it one more week then it is coming out of the ground and back to Willis for a refund/replacement, green under the bark or not.

same problem here. i ordered a large angel red from willis about 3/1; about 4/15 even the scratch test failed.

so i returned it; planted a new one from willis about a month ago; still no signs of growth

i bought from willis because every other supplier only had 12" angel reds, being a new introduction; but willis had 5-6 foot angel reds

bhawkins, did Willis suggest how long it could take to leaf out? Did yours leaf out yet? Still nothing on mine, nearly 6 weeks after planting. And how did you return yours, and at what cost? I didn't keep the original shipping box.

I bought a Wonderful at a local nursery, same size as the red angel, fully branched and beautiful, for a third of what the Willis "sticks" cost.

hasn't leafed out yet. when i snap a twig, its still green; just no leaves.

i have lots of boxes; cost me $35 or so to return it, due to the box size
